When I posed this question last year, I was told that it will never come to Broadway as Australian humor doesn't resonate with Broadway patrons. However, if I recall correctly, it had a reading on Broadway. Major disappointment as I am dying to see this show!
To clarify because I think I made that claim - I have absolutely no insider information or reason to believe that beyond pure speculation. It's more just having seen the show in its original incarnation and being aware of the kind of audience dynamics in Australia, London and New York it's not something I could see going straight to Broadway, unless they could get someone like Kylie Minogue in one of the roles.
The path to Broadway I could see is a successful West End run and building hype/awards and THEN a Broadway transfer. But to open cold on Broadway to me seems like madness (which is why I would not be surprised if it remains a bit quiet). Maybe an off-broadway run if we're lucky).

It was in late talks to have a US premiere at a major regional theatre this spring, I heard, but it fell thru and I’m not sure what has happened since.

Like most regional theatres nowadays, they probably had to cut their budget, because they couldn’t afford to produce a US premiere of a big musical like this.
I fell in love with this movie when it first came out, but hadn’t watched it for many years until recently. Yikes, I forgot how dark it is. I wonder how this would be received in 2023? Even since its Australian run four years ago, attitudes have changed so much. Would audiences today accept the way Muriel is treated and the choices she makes? I think we’d hear the word “problematic” repeated ad nauseum. The previews for the Aussie production make it look like a cross between Mamma Mia and Margaritaville, so maybe they lightened up some of the dark stuff. However, that might make it worse, just in a different way.

Word I heard post-reading was that interest post-reading was non-existent. There's a lot of bad stuff that get a lot of producers to invest money, so that tells me we may be dodging a bullet not having this right now at least...

This was a producer choice, the theatre was game.
