Having already seen both movies.. . I can say that Rent might go completely untouched by Oscar. Not saying it wont do well. Just that it isn't a oscar worthy movie. ( However .. what Isaw was a rough cut.. so who knows).

There are some new reviews of RENT up on Oscarwatch. One is written by a self-proclaimed Renthead. The other is written by someone who despised the stage production. Both reviews are very well-written raves. Both describe the film as possessing great Oscar potential - esp. Best Picture, Heredia, Martin, Dawson and possibly some techs. It is "the film that will come out of nowhere." (ha)
Just a note: The other films with Oscar buzz haven't been living up to expectations. They may get tremendous critical acclaim, but who is still talking about them?
I saw Capote a few days ago and left thinking that no one besides Hoffman, Futterman (screenwriter - admittedly because I like him as a person rather than because he wrote a brilliant screenplay) and possibly the cinematographer deserve nods. The film has structural problems. If Capote is the most well-reviewed film this year, then I'd like to see what the other four major contenders will be.
Rent has something that many other films don't have: Spectacle. That may be enough to carry weight for it with the guilds - a force with which to be reckoned in the Academy. (Of course none of this guarantees that when I see the film, I will personally think it's Oscar worthy. Just spreading the good word.)

i think it will boost their careers too. and if idina already signed, then she is a sure bet to reach a new high. i hope adam's cd hit the charts too.
but..... i don't really see any oscar noms for acting - only because the competition this year is already pretty tough. those are some great films that they are talking about. (even the ones that we have not seen have good actors and great subject material. )

I really hope every thing turns out about how Evelyn said. Those are some very reasonable observations, imo. I REALLY hope it is the 'sleeper' amongst all these critically acclaimed hot shots. Do you think there is any change they will expand the amount of films that will be nominated in categories to accomodate for the fact that this year is JAM PACKED with supposedly incredible movies? that would be awesome, although im sure it doesnt happen.
And sallybrown, did you really think Cheadle would beat Foxx? Just wondering---I also LOVED his performance as well has Hotel Rowanda in general, but I thought Foxx had it in the bag.

I will laugh so hard if the only recognition Adam gets is for his on-screen makeout skills.
I'm sorry, but I will laugh.

Posted: 10/31/05 at 11:38pmAs much as I love Rent and hope that the film is great as well as successful, I'm doubtful that it will have any chance of major Oscar noms, let alone wins. There are just too many stronger prospects which will be out there in the required time period.

I am sorry but "RENT" will get nominated for an Oscar when the rapture returns bringing with it the second coming of Christ.
Take a look at some of the films it is competing against (or will be). "RENT" stands buckleys in getting a Best Movie nom and nobody outside of a bunch of Broadway wanks well even think of it.
"Cinematography" nom? Possible, but remember that award is normally always dominated by the historical epics. Plus do a comparison, the rolling hills of Wyoming in "Brokeback Mountain" or the inside of a bar in "RENT"?
"Costumes" nom? Get real folks, that is proberly the least likely award it will get nominated for. Unless the movie suddenly performs a "Pricilla" on us, that category will by dominated by again said hostorical epics.
Tech Awards? What tech in the movie? The fireworks? Seriously people we had more tech in "The Lizzie Maguire Movie". "RENT" ain't getting any tech awards.
If "RENT" is to get any noms it will be in the acting categories and even then I don't know. Seriously I never understood the appeal of seeing Idina caterwauled through "Over the Moon".

Just to let you know, I'm not obssessed or tripping about if this movie will do well at the Academy's. I understand completelely the "premature" verbage.
I can hope thoough can't I?
As someone already said, Idina and Adam wlll seriously get some fans from the movie.
And know what, if nobody notices...f*** em.

Posted: 11/1/05 at 9:40amMany nominations AND wins have a lot to do with BUZZ. Until we get closer to the nominations and all of the eligible films are released, no one can know what the buzz is going to be. Even after the nominations are made, the favorites in the various categories change based on buzz. As much as the awards are supposed to be about recognizing the best, there is so much more playing into who gets nominated and then wins.

Posted: 11/1/05 at 12:19pmi think Rent & The Producers will do well at the golden globes since they have there own best comedy/musical categories..but at the oscars i dont know if i see alot of nominations for either. The producers release date makes it a better chance for the oscars being that alot of the movies nominated always seem to come out in december. you never know whats going to happen tho so i guess we can wait and see.

Posted: 11/1/05 at 1:40pmI don't really care if it wins an Oscar. I mean, if they did it would be awesome but that does not mean that it is any less of a movie. There are MANY, MANY movies that were not nominated or won an Oscar and they are considered classics and loved by many movie-goers. As long as they stay true to the stage show and Jonathan's vision . . . that is mainly all I care about. The soundtrack has already impressed me beyond words and if the movie does the same, then who cares about a little statue?

Posted: 11/1/05 at 6:23pmRentaholic- I knew Foxx would win, but I was still disappointed. To me, Don Cheadle beat out Foxx 100 times over.
