...considering that The Producers is coming out in December? I am. Wasn't Nathan Lane who Adam lost to last time (the Tony's)? I really wish it wasn't so close on the heels of RENT, though I know they are very different plays. I liked The Producers, don't get me wrong. They will get lumped together as musical movies with original cast members though, so I'm anxious. I want RENT to win as much as they possibly can!

Okay, nuff outta me.

does anyone really think the actors will get individual nominations? i think maybe best picture and technical stuff, but even that will be iffy. and it's not even eligible for song.

i hate to say it,... this is painful, but adam's acting just isn't good enough for an oscar.

Adam's name hasn't come up in any "Oscar-related" buzz as of yet. Nathan's however, has.

I hope Rent does ok, but it is opening on a TOUGH weekend, where the number box office slot is already predetermined.

I really dont think there will be any individual acting oscar nominations. Technical and best picture nominations are possible. I really dont see rent as being a big award winner.

I don't see either movie getting serious Oscar consideration.

So what? They could still both be huge hits. Prior to CHICAGO, the last Broadway musical adaptation to be a true "HIT" was GREASE - and it didn't get any oscar nominations.

I at least see Rent as a bigger contender than The Producers. It's much closer to a traditional "Oscar movie" - dramatic, beautiful (from what we've seen so far), somewhat controversial, a main character dies, etc, etc. The Producers is more of a silly romp - more like a traditional "Tony show." I mean, look at the Best Pictures for the past few years... "Gladiator," "A Beautiful Mind," "Chicago," "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and "Million Dollar Baby." Whereas, the Best Musicals have been "The Producers," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Hairspray," "Avenue Q," and "Spamalot." I don't know if Rent will win many awards, but I really don't think The Producers will do any better.

re: Adam -- I think we should wait and see the movie before we say his acting won't be good. I think we're going to be very surprised, given what I saw him do last Monday. VERY surprised. THAT said, no, I don't think he has a chance for an Oscar, simply because the lead actor category will be packed with huge recognizable names, for one thing. He's under the radar. Could this performance be good enough? Sure. It got him a Tony nomination, and that was before he approached the role as an actor. I can't imagine that the poor man is backwards enough that an eight-year learning experience would make his performance of the same role worse. But even if it's "good enough," I think it'll be very overshadowed. It seems like because he's not "an actor" it's become really easy to snap your fingers with little consideration and just go "Adam's gonna suck." Call me a hypocrite because I've been known to say that he isn't the best actor in the world. But I've hardly said that I don't have faith in how he'll do in the movie. If there's anything he can do beautifully, it's Roger.

My biased two cents. An opinion.
*puts soapbox back into closet*

Adam, Anthony and Rosario would be the three eligible for lead, the rest for supporting. I feel like Adam and Anthony could just as easily cancel each other out, in a way. Rosario could be fair game, I suppose.

I think this whole thread is a bit premature.

I think this movie could easily launch Rosario Dawson's career. I don't think she'll be considered for many awards THIS time around, but the movie and her performance will probably help her build credibility as an actress for future considerations.

As much as we love to hope for this kind of stuff for RENT, is it even at all likely? We are definitely musical theatre fans and in our opinions we feel that RENT deserves it, but even Chicago had a huge starstudded cast. Are we getting our hopes up over something that doesn't have a shot?

I agree that this thread is rather premature, BUT I'm going to chime in anyway. I don't think Adam will get an Oscar nomination. Though, I wouldn't be all that surprised if he pulled out a Golden Globe nomination, since w/ the Musical/Comedy category they double the number of actors up for nomination. We shall see. I don't think that's totally out of the realm of possibility though.

I know the Oscars don't have one, but are there any "big" awards that give something for "breakout performance?"

Oscars, like the Tonys, arent given to the best in each category. If the Rent movie gets tons of nominations, great. If it doesn't, its not the end of the world. I'd expect the movie to do great things at the Golden Globes, when, like Mabel said, the nominations are by genre.

I just don't thikn any actors will get nominations from RENT with the exception of maybe Wilson for Best Supporting because it's tough sometimes to determine the leads from the supporters, you know? While RENT has a deeper theme and meaning, the Producers is still going to be like eye candy I can imagine.

The thing with me and the Oscars though, is that I love them, I actually really do. I know people are always saying "whatever it's some material award that just gives people more money" but I enjoy them every year to the greatest extent. HOWEVER ever since Don Cheadle lost I'm still holding my grudge so while I personally think RENT would deserve nominations and even wins (yes, I still haven't seen it...I'm judging by story, characters, music..etc..) if it doesn't happen I refuse to be upset like I was before...

Baha it's like a love story, my opinion with the Oscars...

I honestly hope htat Nathan Lane doesn't get a nomination much less a win for The Producers. I think his character is a great character mind you, and I really LOVE LOVE LOVE Nathan Lane but as far as Oscars go??...Not so sure.

I have really high hopes, but I am not going to start going into oscar buzz until I see the film.

Although Wilson is the one that I'd probably throw into the ring. His transformation into Angel is really quite amazing, and he did win the Tony for it. We'll see how he plays out on screen however.

Sony is definitely pushing the film for Oscar nominations. They already have a "For your consideration" ad on the variety.com website and screenings set up in NY/LA/SF/London to aid in nominations.

Obviously, any thoughts regarding noms are wildly speculative before the movie comes out, but I agree that the most likely acting nom is Wilson -- he has the showiest role with a lot of heart and range, he already has the Tony for the same role, and in general, supporting noms will be easier to come by. If the movie is as good as we hope it will be, he'll be nominated. Second most likely in my mind is Rosario -- the lead actress category is less competitive this year than lead actor and this could be a breakout role for her. I'm expecting a Golden Globe nomination for her. Third is probably Idina -- I think she is the only other person in the cast to have won a major acting award already, which brings her both more name recognition but also more attention as a future award nominee(I'm not saying it's right, but I think it is true). Unless the movie gets a real wave of critical acclaim (which might happen), I would say no one else stands a chance at individual acting noms except maybe Adam for Golden Globe (although I think both Nathan and Matthew are going to get nominated in his category, so there may not be space for him).

I agree that this conversation is premature. But having said that I am going to put in my two cents anyway :)
I doubt there will be any acting nominations for the Oscars. There's so much competition this year. But my favorite awards show happens to be the SAG awards. I always feel it's the most accurate since it's actors voting for actors. Those awards have an ensemble movie cast award, and that is an award I believe RENT could definitely walk away with.

Well even though I'm waiting until the movie comes out, I think from what we have seen it could do well. I think it might get cinephotography (sp.?) and it might get a best picture nomination. and maybe best costumes. i think wilson could get an oscar, maybe rosario. but i definatley think it has a chance for best picture. it won the pulitzaer, the tony, so it could win the oscar next. i think the the producers may get acting nom.s, but i don't think best picture. it doesn't seem like a "best picture" movie.

Not to be nitpicky 442namffug but I think "launch Rosario's career" is somewhat poor choice of wording considering she's been doing films since she was 15 and was a heavy contender in becoming nominated for an Oscar especially back in 2003 for her work in 25th Hour. The girl has an established career already and despite the fact she may not be as mainstream as other actresses, I've read many an interview where directors are gushing over her so she's already an established name where it counts. If anything her career was launched by 1998's He Got Game since it furthered proved her work in Kids wasn't a fluke.

But to go back on to the topic, I do agree the conversation is a bit premature, but we also have to take into consideration some of the other films released this year, techinical awards could easily go to King Kong which will be out in December. Oscar favorite Charlize Theron is out with North Country and you know how they love those kind of films. I'm not saying Rent doesn't have a chance, because I have all the faith in the world it will be an excellent film that will make me cry over and over again, but there are other factors to consider.

Oh and mikem, Idina isn't the only person to have won a major acting award. Wilson won the Tony for Rent back when it debuted, long before Idina.

I'm not at all worried about Rent's Oscar chances because it's not going to be nominated for anything.

I prefer Rent but The Producers has the all makings of an Oscar films-the big old-fashioned musical, the great comeback by Mel Brooks who was considered over in Hollywood, and a star-studded cast all wrapped up in a classic story.

My hope for some of the Rent actors is that they escape the critic's wrath and are able to parlay this opportunity into modest film roles. I don't include Rosario because she's always been a critic's favorite. An Oscar nomination for any of them would be the shock of all shocks as far as I'm concerned.

Now if we're talking Golden Globes, where the field is bigger and musicals share a separate categroy with comedies, I could easily see Rent and Rosario getting nominated. But again, I'd fully expect the musical comedy The Producers to walk all over Rent in that category.

I think it's more accurate to say that this has the potential to put her on her way to becoming a "household" name, since her career is already in fine swing.

I think this movie will really launch the careers of Adam & Idina in the popular world of music and movies.

Not sure about the actors getting Oscar noms though.
