We are considering a visit to NYC in August to see a few shows. In chicago, we have been very lucky purchasing rush tickets-I imagine its a little more difficult in NYC-anyone out there have success with the more popular shows? We are considering Some Like it Hot, Kimberly Akimbo, and Sweeney Todd to name a few.
thanks in advance!

Sweeney Todd doesn’t have rush tickets at the moment. I got rush seats to Kimberly very easily but that in the winter I can imagine it’s a little more challenging now.
My friend and I got great $60 orchestra rush seats to Kimberly a few weeks ago, getting to the box office in the early afternoon ahead of an 8pm curtain. Keep in mind though of course that was pre-Tonys.

As far as 2 weeks ago Kimberly akimbo, some like it hot, life of pie, peter pan goes wrong, maybe others were easy rush any day of the week at box office open, Post tonys is a bad time to rush for shows that do well, however popularity can lead to lesser shows being more available. On a multi day trip I would split people to stand in line for kimberly akimbo and some like it hot. and have someone hope sweeny is selling standing room . Between those three near the same place you are going to get tickets, especially if you are willing to wait really early. I would also have a backup plan for shows offering rush if you strike out. Peter pan goes wrong should be top of the list. Also blue man group and play that goes wrong are constant winners for off broadway.

Those shows have lotteries as well and since you enter and the winners are all picked the day before, there is absolutely no harm in playing the lottery, see if you win that way and if not, then trying for rush the morning of the show at the theater. When I was in New York in April, Kimberly Akimbo was an easy win though I would imagine it will be tougher now. I didn't play SLIH but I had the impression that wasn't too hard to win either. Sweeney on the other hand, was and is almost impossible.
