She called for no lines tonight. Solid, confident performance. As I said, she seems to be having a ball — and in the intimacy of the Booth, and with the (gorgeous) living room setting, it really does feel like a private tête-à-tête with Bette. I mean Sophie. I mean Sue.
Went to the 4/20 matinee. Stage Door: In the theatre I asked 2 people working there if she came out the stage door, and they said she does, and it's essentially the whole theatre outside, so after the show I sprinted outside, and the barricades weren't there and the man told me Bette would not be coming out that day. Rush: I rushed the show, got there at 7am, and was first in line they give out the last row of the mezzanine, center. So 14 seats per show.
I stagedoored successfully after the Monday night performance April 8. There was a maze of barricades with two on each side of the stage door area leading to her car, then there were more that lined the way her car would exit Shubert Alley; a cop was supervising the entire exit process. We waited for about 40 minutes and Bette came out and signed for those lining the barricades at stagedoor. Fortunately I had one small person in front of me and got my Playbill signed and was able to tell her that I loved her in The Rose, to which she thanked me. *blush* She is teeny tiny! Bruce Vilanch came out and got in the car before her. There were a zillion people watching but those nearer to the stagedoor were able to get signatures.
