It was a big publicity stunt in an attempt to boost sales. She profiled it heavily on her talk show too.

I never saw Rosie in Grease or Seussical but she always tried to sing on her show (and when she hosted the Tony's). I never thought she could sing.

Literally, she is tone deaf.

She promoted Seussical ever since she saw it. Then weeks later Kevin Chamberlain made a surprise appearance on her show. John McDaniel started to play some of the Seussical score during Rosie's monologue. She stopped what she was saying and asked "John - why are you playing Seussical?" and he replied "Well, there is someone here who wants to ask you something..." and Kevin came out with a speech prepared, in Seussian rhyme, asking her to come be their Cat in the Hat. She accepted on the air. One of my favorite moments.

She's funny. She's an entertainer. She can act somewhat. But singing - it's not her strongest quality. It comes off as comical.

HOWEVER - when she sang "Do You Hear What I Hear?" at A ROSIE CHRISTMAS with Elmo, it was BEAUTIFUL! I never heard her sing BEAUTIFULLY before!!

Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Didn't they digitaly fix her voice on her Christmas albums so she was at least on key?

To answer the question that was originally asked...

I worked at Seussical when it first opened, and when Rosie took over, I saw quite a bit of her performance. I thought she was very good in the role, actually--she was very funny and the audience couldn't get enough of her. She didn't have to sing so much as sell the songs, which she did!

And if it was a publicity stunt--which I guess it was--it worked. We were sold out during Rosie's entire run.

And just in case anyone else was thinking of asking, I had left by the time Aaron Carter arrived to play Jojo, so I can't tell you anything about him. He must not have done very well, though...didn't the show close either during or immediately after his run?

No, Rosie sang live on her televised Christmas concert. Nothing digitally fixed. Can't speak for the CDs.

LOVE Rosie. Saw her in Seussical and thought she did what was required of the role and made it her own - which is The Rosie In The Hat. She can't do a hand stand, but she can balance a chair on her finger!

I saw her in both shows. She wasnt that bad in both but she was better suited for seussical. Her "worst things i could do" in grease was almost funny.
