I will be there...and I CANNONT WAIT! I've never seen Bernadette in concert. Of course I've seen her in ITW, AGYG, & GYPSY (and the final performance of that was the best theatre experience I have ever had in many a year of theatre-going).
This is a beyond thrilling night and I can't wait! Where is everyone sitting? Tonight just may be going to gay mans heaven.

We saw this show just when she started doing it (only her second time performing it) and it was SENSATIONAL!
Too many highlights, but her FEVER brought down the house - and I think surprised a few people

She was simply magnificant. One of the greatest concerts I've been to. She was clearly quite emotional during many of the songs, but that was to be expected because of her recent tragedy.
I'll let someone else post the song list because I know I'll forgot a few. But I will say that when she closed the evening with "Rose's Turn," I have never seen an audience leap to it's feet that quickly.

Okay, okay. Here's the song list, but not in order:
-Move On
-No One is Alone
-Fever (Outstanding)
-You Could Drive a Person Crazy
-Rose's Turn
-There Won't Be Trumpets
-Untitled song from Sondheim's forthcoming musical
-Children Will Listen
-Mr. Snow
-Time Heals Everything
-Not a Day Goes By
-Being Alive
-Nothing Like a Dame
-Unexpected Song
...and I am forgetting several. Sorry.

Yes, a truly amazing evening.
Highlights:
Fever: Sublimely sexy
Time Heals Everything: Amazing.
Rose's Turn: Powerful. Awesome. Better by far than any of the 3 times I saw her in Gypsy.
Not A Day Goes By: I defy anyone who was at the '96 GMHC concert (Hell--anyone who lived through the early years of AIDS) to hear her sing this song and not cry for lost loved ones. Add in Bernadette's own tragedy and you've got a show-stopper. I cried like a little girl. A very sad little girl.
Mind you, Bernadette made no explicit reference to the death of her husband, nor is it mentioned in her bio. But it certainly adds texture to her interpretations. Or our interpretation of her interpretations. When she sang
"sometimes people leave you,
half way through the woods"
who wouldn't get choked up? Only an animal. Or a Republican.
And she looked super sexy. A great evening.

Oh--and what's the number 2 reason to see a Bernadette Peters concert??? Why, to see BFF Mary Tyler Moore, of course.
Oy, the poor thing; she should eat.

Posted: 5/1/06 at 10:48pmSondheim was there as well. I was standing near him outside for about five minutes. No one noticed him at first, but then the swarms of fans came. After about ten people or so, someone who resembled Lonny Price pulled him away. Mr. Sondheim was friendly to all of the fans, though.

Posted: 5/1/06 at 10:49pmBernadette said that S.S. said she could sing the song, and that she should say it was from his up-coming show "un-titled".

I was there and she was in top form. I was embarassed that she saw I was a mess half the night since half the show was Sondheim. I don't believe she sang "There Won't be Trumpets" though. She started with "Let Me Entertain You" then went into "No One Is Alone." It was interesting to see that her songlist is similiar to what Barbara Cook has been doing the last few years. I was on the lookout for Sondheim but didn't see him. I thought he was stage right since she looked there when she introduced the forthcoming song from the "Untitled" show. I did spot Mary Tyler Moore, Natalie Cole and Beverly Sills.

The new SS song was in the spirit of "Can that boy Foxtrot"--i.e. a love song about a man in spite of all his flaws. The singer loves his exuberance, his vitality and his joi de vivre. How he "glides through life". Another line: "Doesn't careless mean having no cares?" A paen to Callow Youth, if you will.
And thanks, Bobby. I didn't hear "Trumpets" either.

Posted: 5/1/06 at 11:56pmHmm. Perhaps she didn't sing "Trumpets." I was at Audra's Carnegie Hall concert Saturday, so I may be thinking of her. But one of them definitely sang that song.
