Posted: 7/4/03 at 4:43pmWe saw the opening night preview, and thought that the show was fantastic !!! The crowd was really into it. The sets were simple but pretty effective, and the signing was amazing. There were a number of excellent voices in the production, standout being the gentleman that played Jim. Cant remember his full name for the life of me, but without going to get my playill, I believe the last name was McElroy. He was amazing !!! The only real problem that we had with it was the length. It was almost 3 hrs with the intermission. There are some parts that could use the dialogue being shortened a bit. No live animals used. :))

Saw the third preview. Great show which included a very talented cast of hearing, deaf, and hearing impaired actors. I was very impressed by the coordination of signing and speaking actors playing each part, as well as some of the actors who both spoke and signed their roles. I love the idea of a production which includes the hearing and deaf communities together. The "Big River" cast is scheduled to perform at Broadway in Bryant Park on Thursday, July 10th, if anyone is interested but unsure about the signing/singing concept. Might be a good way to check it out.
Michael McElroy also appeared in the Playwright's Horizon's production of "Violet" and is on that cast recording. Great show, great recording as well. I also think Michael McElroy has a great voice, simply beautiful and amazing.

I love that Dan Jenkins was Huck in the orig BIG RIVER (& nominated for a Tony); enjoyed him in BIG, but unfortunately didn't love the show. IMHO, his singing, Ty Giordano's signing fit perfectly.
Tyrone Giordano IMHO is super expressive.
Michael McElroy's intensity, gorgeous voice highlights the show.
The 2 Pap Finn's in Act 1 were lots of fun.
Also liked alot Mary Jane's sweet voice in Act 2 (reminded me of Dolly Parton).
I'm happy to report that I thought the sets were very inventive, altho I kept worrying that someone might sprain an ankle; lighting was also integral.
Since I am known to sometimes like CountryWestern music & its very simplistic lyrics, tonight's BIG RIVER was very enjoyable for me.
