Burstein, Hecht, & Shamos to star in AWAKE & SING - MTC (Dec. 2026)

Hecht and Shamos are terrific choices for Bessie and Myron. Burstein is luxury casting in the relatively small role of Uncle Morty.

If I had a total blue-sky wish list for the rest of the production, I'd love to see Andrew Barth Feldman as Ralph, Alden Ehrenreich as Moe, Hannah Einbinder as Hennie, Will Brill as Sam, and Mandy Patinkin as Jacob.

The last Broadway revival definitely leaves big shoes to fill, though. It was so well done.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I just looked it up and HOLY CRAP that’s a cast. (It was just slightly before my entry into the theatre world)

Burstein is a titan of stage and yet is so humble and always just seems happy to be there. He’s my male equivalent of Kara Young.

Assuming things are consistent with the last revival and she'll be considered in the Featured category, she'll have some stiff competition from Allison Janney.

I liked that revival a lot, but agree. Did anyone see NAATCO's superb revival?

It is certainly a favorite of mine. But I just... blah. Broadway prices are so insane these days and with my vision, it I'm not close at something like this, I just don't want to go. I suspect there will be things I feel I need to see over another Awake and Sing!. But oh, it is a lovely play.

I saw the 2006 revival in college, and it was indeed a masterpiece. Wanamaker, Ambrose and Schreiber in particular. I remember Wanamaker stealing her scenes, and I am legit excited to see how Hecht plays it--though the heart of the story turns on the younger characters, so lets see who they cast, one can only dream.
