I just saw it and I liked what I saw. It was hard to really get a scope for the number because of the small space. The cast seemed hyper aware of it. Might have been better to do "You're the Top" or "Friendship" due to the stage restraints.
I'm looking forward to seeing it next week.

"Now watch how it should be done."
That GMA was an abbreviated performance in a tiny space. The above poster wants to compare it to Patti Lupone on the Tony awards. Let's do that"
"Hi boys I'm Patti Lupone doing Mae West doing Patti Lupone"
"something.... 'You LIke'.... something.... 'YouLike'... something... 'YouLike'
attempt a time step and then go stand behind the chorus
reemerge ... something...something..."Like Eva Peron!"
The country as a whole will get the more detailed version of Sutton's number the night she wins the Tony.

Sutton's not going to win the Tony this year, but I liked her Reno Sweeney just fine. She's no Ethel Merman but she's a very good Ginger Rogers and thats a valid take on the role.

Posted: 3/25/11 at 9:24amGinger Rogers is indeed a very good take, especially for a Ginger Rogers that can sing like Sutton Foster. She will definitely be nominated. And there is a very good chance for a win.

I was disappointed. They danced well, but I felt Sutton looked bored. I didn't think the tap was all that fun either. No big progression/harder steps at the end from what I saw. NO real enthusiasm from the ensemble (I think they should whoop it up during that number). JUst did not feel that lively to me. And I actually started to get bored.
I love Anything Goes as a show, but got no excited feel from watching the number -- which makes me sad . . .

Posted: 3/25/11 at 10:19amNah, she's not bored but I do think Sutton's going for a touch of 'droll' in her Reno Sweeney which is a little at odds with her personality and thus not especially organic.

I really don't think we can judge the number based on the performance they crammed into that tiny space on GMA.
I can't say that I love her sound with this score. But again, I haven't seen it live. I hope to check it out soon.

It's a really fun production and I enjoyed it a lot. It's definitely worth seeing.
Taking nothing away from Foster who I did enjoy - its a treat again seeing that clip of LuPone on the Tonys. Many people who know far more than I still say Reno Sweeney really was her greatest accomplishment.

Thought it was fantastic.
To all the haters - I thought they did a fantastic job given the smaller stage, and probably a very early call (after having just did an evening show). Sutton sang the song beautifully live and they all danced their butts off
congrats to the cast

Bored? Nah. Nervous? Yeah.
As I said before I felt the cast was really aware of the small space. I feel a production number was simply a poor choice. Given the space something else would gave served them better. I was waiting for someone to bump into a wall or another dancer. The fact that they didn't says something about the talent/awareness/choreography.

Posted: 3/25/11 at 11:11amHaving seen the show, I can tell you that the camera angles on this clip do nothing to show how great the full number is in the theatre. Sutton is magic in the number onstage, and the angles here don't capture that either.

I think they sound great, though a couple of Sutton's choices are a bit odd.

Yes that GMA number was the "Cliff notes" version. Maybe they wanted to get across that the show has big production numbers but that is hard to do with a short version in a cramped space.
The other clip on the GMA site is wonderful. I do like all of Sutton's choices matching the lyrics there. She's a beautiful blonde who deadpans a quick "smile on the Mona Lisa ," manages a spot on impersonation of "The Great Durante" and when Colin sings, "You're Botticelli," she morphs into bias cut 'Venus Arising.'

I like her high note at the end, although she does seem to be a little in need of oxygen for the 30 seconds or so before it when she turns upstage.
Those sniping at the long tradition of the star exiting and re-entering during the dance break forget that it accomplished two things:
1. It meant that the star had full breath power to thrill the audience with the final vocal chorus. (Like Karen Morrow's spine-tingling re-emergence after after the dance break in "I Had a Ball.")
2. It meant that the chorus dancers could give the audience 100% of their skill and energy without holding back or making the star look bad.

A point on what Pal Joey says - I kind of thought, based on Kathleen Marshall's comments that this was really going to be the 'first' production in which Reno Sweeney really lead the song and dance of the show, that Foster would dance more in the production on a whole.
She dances up a storm in the title number, which is wonderful unto itself, but having Reno dance it with the others actually diminishes the star quality of the character a bit in my opinion.
I would frankly have preferred she danced more in the earlier numbers (the lack of a dance duet between Foster and Joel Grey in "Friendship" seems something of a missed opportunity) and let the chorus girls lead the dance section of the title song.
For what its worth, I think LuPone in 1987 probably could have handled most of the dancing Foster does in this production.

Not sniping at the long tradition (a tradition that is mainly a tradition due to the rareness of triple threats of Sutton's level than it is for other reasons), just sniping at the immediate second posted comment with the link to "how it should be done." Not only is Sutton powerful vocally with crystal clear diction, she is a rare star who can stay with the chorus with little if any dancing down. And even if there is some accommodation, it is spectacular to see it done. And, in my opinion I don't think the dancing of the chorus alone in the Lupone version has anything on this number. Sutton gets that quick break to look upstage and be appropriately out of breath in character before turning around and powerfully delivering her final commentary on the whole bit of shenanigans she has just "fully" participated in. She is regularly under-appreciated and is regularly the target if quick snipes like that second comment, which is why I chose to counter with what has been said about the performance that was held up as "the way it should be done."
*Note on seeing other comment on Lupone in '87 probably being able to handle all the dancing Foster does in the show. She might have been able to get through the steps, but how she would look doing so would be the question. And, she certainly would not have had the stamina to pull off what Sutton does in the title number. So, in that way, — no she could not have handled the dancing Foster does in this show. Also, Foster accomplishes a similar feat in 'Blow Gabriel,' penche included.
*And I find the "touch of droll" (quite aptly put, it isn't boredom) not entirely inorganic to Sutton's personality (from what I have seen of it, not being a friend or anything). I think she has managed to put together a powerfully singing, and dancing Ginger Rogers-of-a-Reno, with a main ingredient of adorable sexiness and a dash of deadpan droll.

Posted: 3/25/11 at 12:47pmI think the choreography in this revival is good but not spectacular. Marshall's work is a little tired and workman like at this point - its the same in everything she does. I want to see more from this Alex Sanchez who did such great things with Where's Charley at Encores. His stuff is truly exciting.
