"Oklahoma!", is by far, the best musical for any high school to do because it will always work as long as it can be sung, has a multitude of leads and ensemble work, and is educational.
I also think that "Bye Bye Birdie" is a great musical for high schools because it's easy for high schoolers to committ to the teenage shenanigans.
"Once Upon a Mattress" is also a splendid choice due to its good book, high amount of leads (most of which can be male or female).
For a dance-heavy show, go with "42nd Street"
As far as modern musicals go, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Seussical" are more complicated and more difficult, but are good choices.
