WE WILL ALWAYS BELONG TOGETHER
Mr. Sondheim, meet Mr. Seurat. When Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine were developing their ground-breaking, Pulitzer Prize winning Sunday in the Park with George in 1983, they paid a visit to the original at the Art Institute of Chicago and Mr. Lapine shot this candid photograph of his famous collaborator in front of the source of their inspiration. According to Mr. Lapine, the visit with the painting occured just before the workshop of the musical at Playwrights Horizons.
This is a limited archival print from a negative that's been sitting in Mr. Lapine's desk for over two decades. He only made two other prints and Mr. Sondheim has one of them.
Lapine has hand-signed the print. On the bottom left it says "Sondheim and Seurat 1983." It is approximately 5"x7" and will be presented to the auction winner in a beautiful 11"x14" mat.
Move on and bid now for an opportunity to own a piece of musical theater history!

Mandy Patinkin did a similar pose on the stage of the Booth Theatre that was used on the back jacket of the original cast LP.
BTW did anyone else notice: the image is reversed! Dot should be on the right.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Well great minds think alike! LOL!
I head heard that Patinkin was inpired by seeing LaPine's photo of Sondhiem, so I was glad to actually see it.

Posted: 4/21/09 at 1:29amIs it the original photo or a reproduction? I can't understand anyone paying that much unless it's actually the original photograph. It's like the window cards. I'm not understanding how the triton gallery is allowed to sell reproductions for $125 for something that is basically a glorified zerox.

Posted: 4/21/09 at 7:02amHow do we KNOW that is Sondheim? That could be ANY gay man stopping by the Institute on a Sunday afternoon before heading back to the hotel, changing into his leather and heading to The Man Hole. Oh...maybe it IS Steve.
