The only musicals I know of so far for next season are based on movies. Are there any originals being planned for Bway that anyone knows of yet?

There's that Ray Charles show...
Yeah but that counts as a Jukebox musical. I mean something brand spankin' new.
A new musical: LOVE NEVER DIES, SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK
A Urinetown-new musical: Not in the foreseeable future.
Isn't Minsky's supposed to be on for next season? That's original. And if Scottsboro Boys transfers, that'll be original.

Not that it matters- great musicals can come from any source.
it is? No.
Yes, MINSKY'S is original....despite the press assuming it was based on The NIght they Raided Minsky's, it is completely original (in a 42ND STREET way)
By "original musical", do you mean original score only? Because that sounds like the only original aspect of almost everything mentioned here. I'd be surprised if Yeast Nation were ready for Broadway any time soon. It's a fun show, but still needs a lot of work. Is the Ray Charles show supposed to be a jukebox musical (Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages)? I thought it was a catalog musical (Jersey Boys, Buddy, Million Dollar Quartet).
Am I the only one who has never heard the phrase "catalogue musical" before?

No, I've never heard that term used either, but I think we do need some kind of a term to distinguish shows like "Jersey Boys", that tell the story of the group whose songs they use, from shows like "Mamma Mia" which have nothing to do with ABBA other than their songs.
Do we really? Why is everyone so obsessed with labeling everything? Jukebox musical, catalogue musical, play with music, etc.
Musicals which showcased popular songs outside the framework of the biographical book of a particular artist were referred to as catalog shows before the advent of Mamma Mia, when the term "Jukebox musical" became popularized. The way the songs are used are very different. Jukebox musicals incorporate the songs into the narrative which has no connection to the featured musical artists. Catalog musicals feature the songs of the subject outside the narrative with actors portraying the artists. Musical theatre evolves and changes, thus the language changes as well. Ignoring the distinction doesn't mean it's not there. It's sort of like saying a musical with a book adapted from anything other than a recent or popular film is an "original musical".

How is Minsky's an "Original" musical? It's based on the film. New songs or not, it's a musical based on a movie.
I'm assuming "original" has some hidden magical definition in the world of musical theatre?

Actually, Minsky's has nothing to do with the film, other than the title. Completely different characters and plot.
