He would have been better off singing his undying love about Hercules.
absolutely beautiful

YES! Ever since I got the CD two weeks ago I have been playing this song on a constant loop. I seriously can't get enough of it. I'll admit that I'm rather obsessed with it...
Of all the songs on The Frogs OBCR, Ariadne is definitely my favorite.

WAT, just because Nathan is gay doesn't mean he can't sing a beautiful love song to a woman. After all, he's playing a character! This is a song that is so touching and moving that I feel overly emothional every time I hear it.
withoutatrace: I believe that what you are saying is offensive to all gay actors. As Olivieri once said when asked if he could play a straight part 'that's why they call it acting'. Besides the song is about love and everyone, gay, straight...whatever...can relate to love and loss.
Sondheim wrote a beautiful song and Lane sang it onstage with just the right amount of pathos. He is not Pavarotti, but you don't have to be to sing this song.
For those of you who did not get the chance to see the show, I know there were detractors on the boards (as there always are) but it was a quirky musical with lots of thoughtful content that we needed at that point in our country -- and still do.
Hope it is revived at some point. In the meantime, the OCR is great. Gotta love bart and lane together.
SamIAm, you put it all so beautifully. This was a fabulous show. Nathan Lane and Roger Bart were both so good as Dionysis and Xanthias, respectively, and I hope that at least one of them is remembered come Tony time. Since this was ruled eligible as a new musical, Sondheim's witty, lovely score can also be nominated in the Best Music/Lyrics category. Woo-hoo! I'm very sorry that not a lot of people got the chance to see this wonderful show, but the cast album will live on!
Nathan's "Ariadne" is among my top ten moments in musical theatre ever. Even though he's a comic genius, it's so great to hear him sing a serious song, and he does it so well. I totally understand - I've been playing this song and "It's only a play" on loop since I got the recording.
On the Concept recording, is Stokes playing Roger Bart's eventual role?

Yep, Gov. Maybe it's just me, but I could never see Stokes as a slave.

It's not just you, Mythus. Roger is definetely a more conceivable second-bannana than Stokes.
