Ashley Brown as Mary Poppins

Posted: 3/29/06 at 11:25pmIt's RIDICULOUS that the Disney producers don't want Laura Michelle Kelly. She's the first choice of director, she originated the role, and, oh yeah, and she won the Olivier Award for it. How insulting to not let her reprise her role.

Didn't see her, but she's who I would like to see.
If not her, at this point, I'm convinced that Keli O'Hara can do anything. I'd love to see her do it.
Rebecca Luker also comes to mind.

The reason they don't want her is because...
When she signed her contract to do the London production, there was a clause in it that said if/when the show went to Broadway, she would get to transfer and reprise her role in NY. As the London production got more successful and the plans to move it to Broadway became more concrete, conflict arose.
The producers told Laura they wanted her to stay in the show in London right up until rehearsels for the Broadway production started. She, on the other hand, didn't want to re-new her contract because she wanted a bit of a lengthy break between doing the show there and doing it here. Last summer, right after this started going on, her understudy started doing all the public appearences and promotion for the show that she normally did, and I even think she might have missed a few shows.
Not suprisingly, shortly after at some point during the summer, it was announced that she would indeed by leaving, and at the end of October, she exited the production. It is expected that the producers will buy out her option to come to Broadway and go with someone else, which is a shame because, from what I have heard, she is brilliant in the role.

Posted: 3/30/06 at 10:28amI honestly don't think anything is official yet, but I heard from a friend as well that Anne was at the top of their list for the role. I've also heard that they're looking at a couple of very talented not so well names. :) In the end, I'm sure if she accepts, Anne will be doing it. I don't think I'm kosher with the idea.

That story about Laura Michelle Kelly's contract is not completely true. As I've protested ad naseum, no producer, not even Disney, not even Cameron can guarantee a British performer a pay or play clause to do a show in a foreign country. They don't have jurisdiction over Equity.
And I think its unreasonable to think the root of their spat is because Kelly asked for a vacation. Kelly is not a star and her name wasn't selling out the show; it is simply far fetched to beleive there would have been that kind of pressure on her to play the show until the New York opening. No way. Don't believe it.
The story I heard is that she has/had another offer that she wants to pursue.

Posted: 3/30/06 at 11:23amYes, the story about Laura Michelle Kelly's contract is just not true. In fact, the reason she isn't tranferring has very little to do with Disney not wanting her. Laura is working on starting a pop career, and couldn't do both that and make her Broadway debut simultaneously.

She was cast as Laura for the workshop, but I believe PD2 precluded her from being cast as Christine in the Phantom film. So we got Emmy Rossum. If she's Mary, that will be great.

Posted: 3/30/06 at 12:52pmI don't understand why anyone would be against Anne Hathaway in the role - she's a great actress, and a fantastic singer. I think it's a great choice.

And she's a semi-name, which I'm sure the producers will like.
Although after her nude scene in Brokeback Mountain, she's kinda lost the spoon-full-of-sugar image, hasn't she?

Posted: 3/30/06 at 4:55pmI just don't see, or care to see Hathaway in the role. I do wish that they would not cast her. Kelly is not the best chice either. My pick would be someone new...

Posted: 3/30/06 at 5:06pmfirst off Laura Michelle Kelly is a memeber if Actors Equity, and so the Union's cant deny her. Second she has already been on broadway.

Horton -
She is NOT a member of Actors Equity. She is a member of British Equity and appeared on Broadway as part of an American/British trade that allowed Jill Paice and Angela Christian to appear in the West End in THE WOMAN IN WHITE. She is not automatically entitled or able to return to Broadway without American Equity approval.
