You are supposed to be disturbed. That's why Sondheim didn't call the show "Thoroughly Modern Mille".
Just my opinion, I may be wrong.
i think he was referring to the Zapruder footage was disturbing, not the play itself...
Yes, I meant the Zapruder film.
And I find MILLIE to be FAR more disturbing than ASSASSINS.
could someone explain what the zapruder footage is. i havnt seen the show, but i am trying to follow the conversation, i think im going to try to see it next month if possible.
NY...Google is a marvelous thing.
But I warn you that some of the images you find may be very disturbing.
thanks robbiej, and i did find it difficult to watch/ however, i still want to see assassins. what do you guys think are the chances of it closing on may 30th, as planned? Updated On: 4/29/04 at 03:46 PM
It's been extended to July 4. Go see it. It's remarkable.
The zapruder film is the famous video clip of the JFK assassination.
(shot by someone named ZAPRUDER...)
I was very impressed with this show. The cast blew me away especially Mario Cantone and Denis O'Hare and Neil Patrick Harris.
Harris has a great voice. I was very impressed with it.It is not my favorite Sondheim but it was a strong production with an equally strong cast.
One problem Denis is even lovable as an Assassin.

I saw this afternoon's performance. I went in mindful of Master's objection over the use of the Zapruder film and was prepared to agree with him that it was inappropriate. However, I have to admit that I found the brief use of the film projected against Oswald's white T-shirt to be a stunning moment. Any and all levity that had preceeded the school book depository scene was neutralized as the realilty of the subject matter hit home. The impact of the gun shot, the lighting, and finally, the Zapruder film almost left me paralyzed in my seat for several moments. The memory of when Kennedy was shot (I was in 6th grade) came back full force. To me, the use of the film didn't feel like exploitation the way it was presented.
What I *did* find unfortunate, was the insertion of the new song, "Something Just Broke", between the JFK assassination and the finale. It took me out of the moment. It's a good song, and it's sung well, but I thought that it weakened the show by lessening the emotional impact of a key scene.
All in all, I thought Assassins was terrific. It's one of the few shows of late that I'm motivated to see again during it's run.
I find the idea tap dancing to make an elevator rise just plain old disturbing...
Run that by again, Sum... Not sure what you are saying.
iflit, my hubby and I have been debating the use of the Zapruder film since last week when we saw the show For me it was just so moving ( I was only 6 months old in Nov. 63) I think it was just edgy enough. My husband who was 4 when it happened thought it may have been too much (his words appalling) at the time, that evening. But now a week removed thinks he has reached a state of ambivalance. It was highly disturbing, but so was the entire subject matter. But as I have stated before this is GREAT THEATRER, and there should be more edgy shows like this.
