I think I've sorted out the pending Dreamgirls CD releases and I've listed them here on the website:
1. Two-disk soundtrack ("Deluxe Edition")
2. One-disk soundtrack (highlights)
3. Two-disk OBC recording reissue, including karaoke tracks and newly-released bonus tracks.
4. "Dreamgirls: A Tribute to the Soundtrack." OK, this one is a bit of a mystery. I did find the cover artwork and I know that it is being released by "CC Entertainment." Some listings refer to "various artists" and the track list is rather short. If anyone knows more about this one, please let me know!

Man this is going to cost a lot of money. I'm definitely getting the 2-disc soundtrack and the 2-disc Remastered OBCR (which I'm honestly more excited about.)

Two disks for the OBC? Why would it take up two CD's unless they were adding someting new....

*Edit* Okay, I see that it has scareeokee tracks as well.
But I am interested in seeing who the various artists are on the tribute album.

I hope so, because I remember Sheryl Lee Ralph telling me that the cast got together to listen to the album when it first came out. They were very disappointed and felt it didn't represent the production at all.
She told me she threw hers away.

I can't wait for the two-disc Film Soundtrack to come out. I've been waiting for too long, lol. It's definitely the only Dreamgirls purchase I plan on making this season, although I don't know anyone who would buy both the two disc and single disc Film Soundtracks. I've never quite understood the concept of releasing a highlights CD except to have a lower cost option, but really you're only saving ten dollars really. Anyway, I will say though I think re-releasing the OBC is stupid, especially re-issuing it before the film. It's a lame attempt to hopefully make some money based on the anticipation of the film. Trust me I don't feel I'm missing anything with my original OBC recording, and I can already guarantee I'm never going to need karaoke tracks for Dreamgirls, and really no one ever should, lol. But again, only my opinion.
Still can't wait for the film soundtrack to finally come out, and obviously the film to be released as well...

Posted: 11/12/06 at 6:17pmThe remastered Broadway cast recording will reportedly include the unreleased tracks "Driving Down the Strip," "It's All Over" and the "Dreamgirls" finale. I was hoping and praying that "Heavy," "I Want You Baby," the Act Two opening and Effie's complete "One Night Only" would turn up, but alas... It's still a woefully incomplete original cast recording, but every little bit helps.

Posted: 11/12/06 at 6:57pmWhen Rent came out as a movie I promised myself I wouldn't get the soundtrack until I saw the movie. Broke the promise. I'm trying again with Dreamgirls, but I have a feeling I'll break that one too.

Yes, with the OBC recording and the concert CD still in print, the the reissue does seem a bit unnecessary (unless you need the karaoke tracks). But it's these various artists on the "tribute to the soundtrack" that really have me stumped. Who are you, you various artists? Who?!
