Worth mentioning that Bioh was an acclaimed actor before becoming a playwright. She wrote School Girls while she was appearing in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Barrymore Theatre, which coincidentally is a few steps away from where she will now appear in her own School Girls at the Friedman and where she made her playwrighting debut with Jaja's African Hair Braiding. She's also Ghanian-American, which lends some additional authenticity. Should be fun!

Will Phantom Tour Land on Broadway?

I saw the tour when it launched in Baltimore, and it is immense. I think it is traveling the country with 23 trucks, which is practically unheard of. Jimmy Curry notes the changes, which are not intrusive to the lushness of the experience. (I think the Pegasus change actually makes more a bit more dramatic sense than the proscenium angel staging of the original. This way the Phantom is silently observing "All I Ask of You" on the roof of the Palais Garnier, rather than hanging out at the top ...

It has been a busy news day! But this was exciting to wake up to. I absolutely loved Full Gallop with Mary Louise Wilson back in the mid-1990s. It's a good role for Patti, and I think this will be a highlight of the season. Also, seeing her in City Center's Stage II will be an experience, since the theatre is so intimate. I've read a previous version of it, and like a lot of Nick Payne's work, it is really fascinating in tone and structure. I don't think it is a spoiler to say it is about a family coping with the disappearance of their teenage son. It fills in information with narrative jumps in timeline, so you find things out gradually. Despite the serious subject matter, Payne includes unexpected moments of humor that catch you off guard. If the audience didn't know coming in, they did right before the show started. Matt Stone came out and gave a speech explaining that the show was reopening after a fire. He mentioned some of the firefighters and first responders who were in attendance last night. The Pulitzer for Drama covers openings from January 1-December 31 for the prior year. So titles that played in 2025 are eligible for the 2026 award. The Off-Broadway run for Liberation was January 31-April 6, 2025 and Broadway was October 8, 2025-February 1, 2026.

That is sad news. So talented. Seeing this brought back a memory of seeing him as Neville Landless in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. When the actors are campaigning to be chosen as the murderer, he was in our section. "Vote for me! I did it!" he said, as he stormed in. My friend who was with me told him we were voting for Jana Schneider's Helena Landless, his character's sister. Without missing a beat, he petulantly responded back, "But she always gets to sing the song!" RIP.
