This is the first time in 5 years we won't be attending (getting to be to much $$$), and hoping he wins this time!!!
He's gonna have to wait a bit longer to win.
But I'm thrilled he was nominated.
Even if his winning this year is extremely unlikely, this gives him one nomination in each acting category, which I think is a pretty great achievement in itself.

There has to be some validation when you are consistently nominated for your body of work. I'm rooting for him but think Rush probably has it made. (I haven't seen GOD OF CARNAGE yet.)

Yeah, hasn't only Boyd Gaines also been nominated in each acting category?
So happy he was nominated. While it doesn't seem likely he'll win, you never know!
Thrilled he was nominated. It isnt his year. I will forever be sour about 2007 because he is arguably my favorite performer. And Im one of those people that think while its amazing to win regardless, I think it is important what you win for. He should have won in 07 but his time will come soon. Perhaps creating a new musical role?
Who is his cheif rival?
Also, last year I think he was only the favorite because he won the Drama Desk Award, and I think it was a suprise to most that he was nominated for the Tony.
MTVMANN, I actually agree that while I was thrilled to see him nominated last year I do think that if any of his recent nominations would be a shock I would think last years for sure. And I do agree its a pretty cool achievment to be nominated in every acting catagory. Especially if the only other to do so was Mr. Boyd Gaines. Perhaps this is truly only the beginning for Raul.
Unfortunately for Raul...and not Boyd...Boyd seems to "profit" from them almost every time!!!!!!

What a surprise.
Most of the pundits seem to think that Geoffrey Rush will win the category.
And Im one of those people that think while its amazing to win regardless, I think it is important what you win for.
I suppose it reveals my cynicism, but I don't think that's always how awards work. Like the Oscars, I think the Tony voters will often give a nod to a sentimental favorite--an old actor or someone who has been passed over many times or someone well-liked--as much as for someone who gave a major, stellar performance during that season. So, although I'm not holding my breath, I wouldn't mind if Raul won this year.
Still rooting for Raul. Maybe when he's not supposed to get it he will!

I would love to see Raul win a Tony, but not this year - Rush is wonderful and deserves to win IMO. I wouldn't want Raul to win just because he's been nominated so many times and never won. He'll win - eventually. He's too talented not to be recognized at some point.
Maybe when he's not supposed to get it he will!
Great, well, that will be something to be excited about. Don't you at least want him to get it when he really, really deserves it -- not out of pity? That was my hang-up with the possibility of him winning in '08. I want him to get the recognition of a Tony, but I don't want it to be out of, "Hey, sorry we screwed up, man, here you go." Raul will win some day, and personally, I only hope it's for something that deserves it as much as Bobby did. STP was a great performance (as was Lenny), but, IMO, nowhere near that level.
I wanted him to get it for Company, but he didn't. Still sortof disappointed about that. Made me realize that nothing is a sure thing with the Tonys! You never know!
In what way did that answer my question?
Trust me, I'm still disappointed about 2007. That show and that performance really... rocked my world in a lot of ways; I don't think him losing that year will ever really be okay. But, IMO, throwing a consolation Tony at him isn't going to fix how much that sucked. And it's a hard debate to get into, because as much as they're supposed to be, of course the Tonys aren't fully, solely based on that one performance they're up for. It's got all kinds of things mixed in. And I'm sure some of the people who vote for him will still do so because of something that happened two years and three roles ago.
My impression now is that you have to be in to win it. If he wins, he deserves it (all the nominees are deserving). If they didn't deserve it, they wouldn't be nominated. You never know all the factors they weigh.... So yes, I'd be happy if he wins!
If they didn't deserve it, they wouldn't be nominated.
Of course, I'm not arguing that; it's obvious. Nor am I saying I wouldn't be happy if he won. I adore him and of COURSE would be more than thrilled for an proud of him. But it would be bittersweet. The whole premise of a group of nominees is how much one deserves it relative to his competition. But it's also about being deserving in comparison the rest of your work, too, I think.
(And if he wins, he deserves it? Really? Raul is absolutely an award-worthy actor, but I'm sorry, that's a ridiculous thing to say, that all nominees are deserving -- how many times have things won that the general consensus has been it didn't deserve it? How many things win out of politics. Sure, nominations and wins mean SOMEBODY thinks they're worthy, but it doesn't mean objectively deserving.)
By deduction, all nominees are deserving, otherwise they wouldn't be nominees to begin with. So yes, it may be bittersweet to some (due to previous disappointments), but a win is a win! As I said, I'm just glad he received the nomination and is in the race! A win would just be the icing on the cake....
By deduction, all nominees are deserving, otherwise they wouldn't be nominees to begin with.
Or someone thinks they are.
But, semantics at this point.
And in the spirit of being direct, I'm not cool with the implication of "I'd be happier than you, yay!" that reads in here. It might be somewhat conditional, but I don't have accurate words for how thrilled I'd be -- and perhaps I have to say that point-blank. I have always rooted for him. Always. Nobody on this board should be surprised by that.
Daniel Radcliffe deserved that spot.
I do give Raul props for emerging from
the whole Fish scandal with dignity.
Raul can wait for LEAP OF FAITH
if that ever happens.
Radcliffe deserved A spot, for sure. I'm really surprised he was left out. I thought he had a shot at winning when I saw Equus, I thought he was brilliant, but I think the timing of the run hurt the show, sadly.
The Susan Lucci of the Tony Awards.
No. that would be Jane Greenwood.
16 nominations.
I think it's her year.
