I know this has probably been answered, but I couldn't find anything when I did a quick search..

I'm auditioning for a community theater show tomorrow..it is a straight comedy. I know I should wear something comfortable but I'm not sure how comfortable...

Would nice jeans and a nice tee shirt be appropriate?
I've auditioned for shows before, but this is the first time in a while and I'm a little out of the loop. =)

It's just a community theater, and if there is no dance/movement audition then just where whatever you want. Your attire is really the last thing the panel is going to care about.
Although I agree with colleen in that the people doing the casting won't care much about what you're wearing, if you really are concerned I would suggest wearing something that makes you look like you "fit" a part.

Personal example: I know that I appear much younger than I actually am (I'm 26 and most people guess 17-18!), so when I audition, I try to wear something that makes me look like the grown-up and mature woman I am--unless I'm auditioning for a teen character or a children's show.

I figure it might be hard for casting panels to picture me playing an adult if I look like a kid (and vice versa), so I try to help by fitting myself into the show even for the audtion.

But don't go overboard! I wouldn't dress in costume or anything like that!

I am 15 and technically not supposed to be auditioning for this show.. [you're supposed to be 16] but the director is letting me try out because I have alot of experience. I want to appear slightly older..but I don't want to push it.

Thanks for the advice!

Although even that varies. I am auditioning for a professional production of Grease in a few weeks and they actually requested auditioners come in '50s attire. Granted, that's out of the norm.

		     			hmmm...very strange.

Ok, I'll modify my statement.

Don't audition in costume...unless requested to do so by the casting panel!

I would suggest nice jeans (not destoyed at the bottom) and a cute shirt, not a t-shirt. A cute, short-sleeve summer button down is always nice, especially with jeans.

If there is a dance audition as part of the real audition, would it be okay to show up in "gym clothes" for the singing/acting part, or would it be better to wear something nice and then change while you're waiting?

If you know you have time to change, then change. But if you're not sure, then come dance ready. If the audition announcement states "come dressed for movement" then the panel will understand and expect you to be in dance attire. Also, a downside with changing is you risk being "lost in the crowd" and not being remembered between your singing/reading audition and your dance audition, so it's good to keep one recognizable item on for both parts of the audition.

The easiest way to be remembered, though I wouldnt suggest it, is to show up without attire.
I take myself WAY to seriously in community theater settings. Last audition I went to I was the only one NOT wearing sweat pants. (It was 10 in the morning) So I guess it varies. You know the director better than we do. What do you think he'd go for?
