Is this a professional audition, community theatre audition or what? Do you know if the director likes things sung from the show for auditions? I personally as a performer don't like to sing stuff from the show I am auditioning for. I would try to find something similar to the style of the music of Hairspray. Maybe something not over donw from Birdie, or Leader of the pack, or something along those lines. I think that BATB is just totally not like Hairspray, but if that is the piece you know the best and you don't have time to learn a new one, that is what I would go with, unless the director doesn't mind stuff from the show. I am sorry I probably just confused you even more.
GOod luck, and if you need any help let me know

Plan to sing a song similar in style to the show you are auditioning for, but prepare a song from the show in case you are asked for it. Many auditions will ask you NOT to sing something from the show you are auditioning for, but it's always best to be prepared. It also makes a difference when the auditor asks, "What are we singing today?", you reply "Corner of the Sky?, and he says, "What again? That's number seventy-four". Always good to be able to switch gears.
Remember, nothing too complicated for an accompanist reading cold, and pick a song with a short intro and a strong start. On a good day, you get sixteen bars to sell yourself.
Good luck!

Posted: 3/30/07 at 11:12pm10 minutes ago, is too ballady, and not the same style as Hairspray. It is sappy, Rodgers and Hammerstein. DOn't get me wrong it is a beautiful song, but just not right for this audition. Hairspray is a show that tires you out, just by watching it so there has to be tons of energy in whatever you sing. I am sticking with Magic Changes from Grease

My advice is to pick a song from a well-liked show. Meaning something from 42ND STREET, GREASE, A CHORUS LINE, and the likes.
WHO AM I ANYWAY? from A CHORUS LINE is one of my secret weapons for auditions.

"im 17 idk those shows im to young lol"
I'm 14 and I do know those shows.
I suggest you sing something from Grease. It has the same up-beat sort of music as Hairspray. Which character are you auditioning for?
