I don't know where the old one went, but seeing all the audition threads is frustrating me. I'm going to post stuff here and if you have anything to add, please help. Also, if you could help with the ranges.

1. Wear something comfortable that flatters you . Don't wear something tight because it may constrict your breathing. Also, buy several of the same outfit that looks and feels good on you in different colors. That way, if you get a callback, it is easier to remember you.
2. DO NOT sing something from Wicked, Rent or Les Miserables. They are majorly overdone and if you sing something from those musicals, the judges will hate you. Also, don't sing anything by controversial composers (ie. Andrew Lloyd Webber, Frank Wildhorn...) Also, don't sing really complicated Sondheim stuff . If the accompanist can't play it, you won't look too good.
3. Don't wear heels , no matter how comfortable you are walking in them. They're too formal and if you trip, you'll look like an idiot.
4. If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, don't bother going .
5. Don't dress like a slob . You want the judges to remember you, but for a good reason.
6. Sing something in your range . I've heard WAY too many people attempt to sing Think of Me or Defying Gravity and they can't sing it. Here are the ranges:
Bass- E two octaves below middle C to middle C.
Baritone-G two octaves below middle C to middle E.
Tenor-B two octaves below middle C to middle G.
(Contr)Alto-F an octave below middle C to D one octave above middle C.
Mezzo-A one octave below middle C to F one octave above middle C.
Soprano-Middle C to A one octave above middle C.
This is not the limit of the ranges. You can be a soprano and go from F an octave below middle C to G two octaves above middle C. I *think* that your range is where your voice fits best . If you can reach the A an octave above middle C but suck at it, then don't count it in your range!
7. If you mess up, keep going, make up words that work if you can (if something supposed to rhyme, and you mess up the first part, its pretty impressive if you can make the next line rhyme), but DO NOT show you messed up. In fact, just in general don't act like you think you did badly, even if you think it's humble. After you finish singing down hang your head, act as if you did what you could and have that be it. The director will not have a higher opinion of you simply because you act like what you did wasn't your best.
8. Don't sing a song from the show unless the notice ro director says to. To choose a song, find a song that is similar to the type of character you're auditioning for or by the same composer. (ie. If I am auditioning for Titanic, I may use something from Nine.)

If you have something to contribute, please do. I'm going to post a bunch of songs that *may* be good for auditions.

Ok, this aint any kind of be-all or end-all, but this is just some of the advice we get given at college. It is from working professionals, so i buy it :)
***

You are essentially your own business and a product, so dress, act and choose your audition material accordingly.

Yes dress comfortabally, but don't walk in giving the impression that you don't care. Also dress according to the part you want to get. Now i don't mean go in gingham to an oklahoma audition, but if you are going for a feminine part, why not wear a skirt?

Also be yourself at auditions - you all blatently know this, but people can see through you like a plate of glass if you are putting on an act. Just as important tho, if you are having a bad day - don't let the panel know. They don't care if your bus was late, or that your mother died - they kust want to know if you can do the job.

Finally choose material that is appropriate for your audition. Again another simple one. Don't stick to that safe song or monologue, just because you don't like the idea of learning anything new.

Oh, one more thing - as much as i hate it. Type casting is your best friend. It gets work, simple as that. Why fight it.

The casting directors want to see you play a part in their show, why not give them a hand by showing them before you've even done much that you can.

Does anyone have "I want to go to hollywood" sheet music? Or know where I could get it? I have been looking for it for ages.

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

you dont have to worry if you trip at an audition! Idina Menzel messed up one of the audition lines and cussed. she started crying but got through it anyway. then when she was she nearly tripped but i guess that didn't matter.

Just an interjection...I assume by judges, you mean Casting Directors???

And there are exceptions to the rule of controversial composers... Bad song : I don't know how to love him. Why? Cause it's unchallenging.
Good song: Only He. As long as you have a good belt.

I agree with the overdone thing (You forgot to include Chess), but not with the controvercial composer.

I will be auditioning for Miss Saigon, and I will be doing a Webber song, because it falls into the same category as to what they are looking for.

Disregard if this pertains to high schoolers. I am speaking on a proffesional level.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Is it on The Mary Yeston Songbook cd? If so there is a score out for it. We have one at our college library - i know i copied the music to this song and think it was from that.
sorry i can't help more
