I will be auditioning for Sweeney Todd in a few weeks, but I'm still not sure what to sing. I'm an alto, tenor to high belt range, and my guidelines are that the audition song must be a sondheim (not company, into the woods, follies, etc.) or legit rodgers & ham. Does anyone have any suggestions for me, and what kind of song would Mrs. Lovett's character sing? Updated On: 11/11/04 at 12:22 AM

You can/should sing Sondheim but not Company, Into The Woods, Follies, etc.? From what Sondheim shows can you audition?

We can use any Sondheims that are not too up-tempo, they should be more along the lines of ballads and have a sound that's reminiscent of the type of music in Sweeney. Any ideas? **Anything** is appreciated!!!

"The Miller's Son"?
I'm kind of stretching it here. But it is a nice song.
Losing My Mind

That's the only one I've been able to come up with so far, too

good thing going from merrily... the reprise is by a belter... not really reminiscent of lovett though?

I can't imagine Mrs. Lovett angsting enough to sing "Losing My Mind." She's such a practical woman. :) And as fond as I am of "Could I Leave You?", that doesn't seem right, either. Neither does "Everybody Loves Louis." Hm. "I Cain't Say No"? Nah.
So I'm sticking with "The Miller's Son," for now. :P

you need a kooky song for mrs lovett...what is your ability like? can you cope with difficult sondheim? she really is a unique character...ill have to rack my brain for this
i wish i was female so i could do this role!!!
"Sooner or Later"
Or
If you really want a ballad you might try "I Read"
Both in the alto range but not necessarily Lovett songs.

What might be quite impressive is:
Send in the Clowns or
Being Alive

The audition parameters are absurd.
Do the GUN SONG from ASSASSINS--it's comic, stylistically appropriate, lyrical in its release and scary. Perfect for Mrs. L.
when I marry mr. snow, with the brittish accent. Change it to "Mr.Todd". It is prob a stretch, but it will show creativity, and a spunk. You will be remembered. Tailored auditions are the best! Break a leg!
