I am auditioning for Fiddler on the Roof. I need a good audition song. The manager of the play already told me NOT to sing anything from Hairspray. So, I need some help. Here are possible choices so far:
Age of Aquarius -Hair
How Could I Ever Know? -The Secret Garden
Tonight -West Side Story

And, by the way, I will NOT be singing anything from: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Hairspray; Wicked; Annie; Avenue Q. So please don't volunteer those songs.

But other than that, please feel free to comment on any of my choices (I know I am bad at picking audition songs). Also, if you have a better idea, please let me know.

Thanks!

are you auditioning for the Broadway company?

No. I'm auditioning for a semi-local thing. Not like Broadway, but not a school play either. More like a district thing. Does that help?

Are you a boy/girl and what's your voice like?

Oh, and by the way, I'd really prefer a female song, as I a female. The director/manager/producers would prefer a song that fits the gender. Thanks!

LOL - you answered my question as I made the post.

"Home" - Beauty and the Beast
"Forget About the Boy" - Thoroughly Modern Millie

Hello? Fidlder on the Roof? Sense the tone! Don't go in singing songs from Hairspray or West Side Story. You want Les Miserables or something of a similar vein.

And I sing soprano 1, but that's in my school choir. I'm really more a soprano 2, as my voice range only goes up to a G or so. And my low range is like a low F sharp. Not a great range, but that's what I have.
And I can belt okay-ish, enough for Age of Aquarius anyways. I can sing rock and Broadway classics and a few other things, but I suck at opera.

Yea Home would be good. DO NOT sing Awuarius...it makes no sense for the show you're auditioning for. Maybe something from the Fantasticks. Depending on how high your voice is.

Okay. I mentioned my (approximate) range in an earlier post... that should give you a good idea.

I apologize for just spelling Aquarius , as Awarius...I am on a lot of cold meds....
I wouldn't do anything from Millie either. If you hope to play a daughter you want to seem Bright eyed but not very brassy and "hey WORLD here I am" ya know?
Something simple, sweet.

Yeah... I dunno what part I want. I would want a singing part, a female part (duh!), and not too old a part, but not too young either. I guess like 14 to 20-something would be okay. Ideally it would be a medium-sized part, not like a huge part with 7 solos, but not a walk-on either.

What about the matchmaker? Does she sing much? How big is her part? Is there a psrticular part that would be "good" for my voice range (previously stated) and meets the requirements/wishes?

All help is greatly appreciated!

The Matchmaker doesn't do much at all. She is a fairly comedic role, but it is mostly speaking. The Main Characters Wife(I can't remember names today for some reason) might be a good role because she is a medium sized role, but has important solos aswell. She is a more important character though. Please keep in mind that it has been a year and a half since I have seen the show, and if I am giving wrong information, please inform me.

Ok, you really should resarch this show if you want to audition.

First of all, the only lead in the show is Tevye. You are much to young to play the matchmaker, Yente, unless of course this is an all youth production. Golde, Tevye's wife, is also too old if this is not a youth production.

You would be most appropriate for one of Tevye's daughters.

Tzeital is the oldest - she only sings solo on Matchmaker, and in character voice at that. She causes chaos in Tevye's family plan when she asks to marry the Tailor, Motel, instead of the old butcher Tevye has arranged for her. She is seen throughout the show, gets married and has a baby, staying in favor with her family.

Hodel, the second daughter, has the most singing. She sings a lot on Matchmaker, solo parts in Sunrise Sunset and Now I Have Everything as well as Far From the Home I Love - her solo ballad. She is headstrong and sarcastic, garnering the interest of the revolutionary penniless teacher, Perchik. Leaves her family to be with Perchik, with her fathers reluctant blessing. I've played this role two times and it's a great part.

Chava, the third daughter, also sings on Matchmaker. Has the most emotonal journey as she falls in love with a Russian soldier and is disowned by her family.

The music if Fiddler does not demand a huge vocal range, so if I were you, I'd choose something I was comfortable with from a show with a very traditional musical theatre sound such as Oliver! or Brigadoon or The Fantasticks. I believe I used "Much More" from the Fantasticks for my Fiddler on the Roof auditions. But, I would encourage you to do your own research and listen to a cast recording before you do anything else. The script is proabably available at your local library or inexpensive at a book store.

...and your children start to leave you from the moment they are born.

Just a note about auditions in general--always sing something appropriate for the show you're auditioning for. For example, if you're auditioning for a pop musical like Hairspray, then something from Jekyll and Hyde, or Wicked, or something like that would be appropriate. If you're auditioning for a classic book musical from the "golden age" like Fiddler, you should sing something in that style, preferably from a musical from that time period. It can also sometimes help to sing a song by the same composer. I usually audition for a Sondheim show with a Sondheim song, for example.

Isn't Rathnait putting on a production of Fiddler? Best to ask her too.
