Would it be bad to sing a song for an audition that is by the same composer/lyricist as the show that you're auditioning for?
Usually yes it is. Try to find something that fits the style of the show you are auditioning for and really shows off your voice.
Tell me what you think... the show I'm auditioning for is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the song I might but not for sure sing is "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar. Bad idea?
Yah go for it. They usually just dont like you singing from the show your auditioning for unless they ask you to.
Well, I'm completely limited on cash right about now, so it's hard for me to go buy another instrumental cd. Do you have any ideas?
i don't think so...i guess it kinda depends on the director... but some people say it's good to audition with the same composer, cause it'll be the same style. depending on the show and the song, it should be ok...

I always heard that you should try to get as near the composer as you can. which is why the only truely acceptable times to do Brown, Sondheim, or Guettle, is in fact for their shows.
STEVOS
NAME IN LIGHTS watch out. Not every place is going to let you audition with a tape or CD. Most will want to hear you with a piano only...that's why a lot say "bring sheet music in your appropriate key." At the very least they will vocalize you with the piano. And for JOSEPH, most of the women (unless it's the Narrator) sing more uptempo songs than "Love Him" (i'm making a huge assumption here that you're female). The Narrator does sing some ballads, but generally not as "rock-flavored" as that number. Maybe "Everything's All Right" instead? plus it's not as well known...
TxTwoStep, you made the right assumption :). I can completely understand where you're coming from, but it's for my school and it's either piano or accompaniment cd/tape. I have no idea what key I sing in (I know, the stupidity is overwhelming), so I just use a cd. The catch is, it is required that we sing a song from a "contemporary pop musical". Funny thing, the only song in my key on that cd from a "contemporary pop musical" is Memory from Cats and there's a snowman's chance in Hell that I'm going to sing that. The audition is on the 24th of November, and I just want to get it done.
