I'm on the lookout for any female mezzo/alto songs that are good for audition. Does anyone have some suggestions?

So far I've found that the characters in both musicals are either curious/ upbeat, sassy, or warm-hearted, but surprisingly I've come across only a few songs that fit those categories. I'm up for any song though, as long as it's not overdone and in the mezzo/alto range.

Here's a idea. Do research. We don't know you. Listen to stuff online. Look at scripts and scores at the library. Put effort in yourself.

You're right, you don't know me. So here's an idea for you: don't waste people's time if you're not going to help them. Unlike you, I didn't post my inquiry to waste somebody's time because was lazy. I asked because I genuinely need help in my search for songs. I thank you for your concern, but I'll have you know there's no need for it.

Do you have access to one of those compilation books? Or do you not want to choose one of those songs because it's "overdone"?
Also... which characters are you going for?
I like the idea of taking a song that shows off your voice and twisting it to fit the part you're auditioning for through your interpretation. Of course, that never worked for me and if you are auditioning in high school, I'm guessing your directors will be similarly unimaginative.
I mean, I like "Could I Leave You?" and "I Can Do Better Than That" but they're very adult songs. Just looking at that list (and not knowing either show well) Annie Get Your Gun, Paint Your Wagon, Sweet Charity, and South Pacific are decent places to look. Also, try The Apple Tree and A Chorus Line. Since it's Lippa, maybe take a look at Wild Party (also very adult) and see if you can make anything work in that. And don't be afraid to go with something like "Show Off" or "Shy" just because they're popular. If you can sing it well and perform it well, go for it.

You didn't once say anything about yourself. What you like to sing. If you're looking for something dramatic or funny or even songs you like.

Why not say songs you were thinking about? No just tell me songs to do. Do some work yourself.
You joined today and then asked for audition songs. Come on.
So sick of this sight. "What song to sing?" "What show to see?"
get an opinion and do research yourself. Watch things. Listen to obscure recordings. Find something that speaks to you. Having people online to pick a song for doesn't show you or your personality.
But to be nice - don't care what you think of me - sing "shy" from once upon a mattress. That's a safe song.

Thank you all for your suggestions! For those of you who are wondering, I'm aiming for the aunts or the spider in james and the giant peach. Both of these roles are sassy. So far, the only songs I've come up with that work are I got the sun in the morning and not for the life of me.

I Speak Six Languages is always a good one. You want condescending and sassy? Six Languages has some of that. I'm the Greatest Star, Roxie, and maybe even Dance: Ten Looks: Three if you're going for a more sassy song than Not For the Life of Me.

Um? Because we want people's opinions????? Doing research is great, like before I pick out shows to see I ALWAYS look at the synopsis, read reviews, listen to some of the songs is all vital before seeing the show. But what's the big deal about going on here to ask what show should I see? So this way people can say what they liked/didn't like about it from an audience perspective instead of a critic perspective. There's nothing wrong with it. And asking for songs to sing is fine too. Its a literal theater chatboard. I've seen threads range on this site from "Ben Platt leaving DEH" to "Prettiest Theater Marquee" so this thread isn't suprising at all. I'm sorry but it's just so ignorant saying "why should we help you? Do your own research don't ask for help"

*ESP (Unless you want to claim a low-key Mean Girls reference, in which case - you do you)
Personally (and this is key), my go-to song on many days is "I Don't Wanna Be Here" from Ordinary Days. It sits at just the right spot in my range that even when my voice isn't in a good shape, I can still get a pretty good 16 bars out of the song.
