My all time favorite was when a friend of mine sang "I Know Things Now" from "Into the Woods" as if she had just found out she was pregnant... Really makes the lyrics have a different meaning!! Any one have any other funny takes on songs that twist the original meaning?
Faith Prince says that she auditioned for GUYS & DOLLS singing "Something Wonderful" from THE KING & I as performed by Adelaide. I'm sure it was a riot...and well, we can assume it was since she got the part.
I heard a slutty rendition of "Shy" from ONCE UPON A MATTRESS sung in the style of "Take Back Your Mink" (sexy tone that go against the tone of the lyrics).

I've always wanted to swing "I'm an Indian, Too"!
...but that would be wrong in so many ways...

Bump!
I'm curious to see what interesting choices have been made in the audition room...

This wasn't for an audition AFAIK, but Sherie Renee Scott sang a version of "Goodbye Until Tomorrow" that turned a lot of the lyrics into sarcasm. It is (or was) on YT, I think.
Sutton Foster does "Oklahoma" as an audition song. I'm very curious to see how that works.
I've read that/heard it on a video or podcast or something. Story goes Sutton used to sing it at auditions when they asked for an uptempo, because it showed off her belt the best, and whenever she got a callback, they would ask her to sing anything else. I believe she got a lot of callbacks by singing that (and being amazing)! I'm pretty sure she doesn't sing Oklahoma! anymore, according to whatever story I read. Although, I have no idea where the evidence would be to back me up, so that's my story and I'm stinking with it. Does anyone else know what article/video/podcast I'm talking about?
AFAIK?
Mister Matt, I believe AFAIK=As Far As I Know
Carol Swarbrick mentioned in a master class once that she knew a guy who used "I Feel Pretty" as an audition song for Gaston in Beauty and the Beast.
I don't know if this is theoretically a twist .. but DOUGLAS SILLS' audition song for "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was "Someone Like You" (from Jekyll & HYDE); apparently he had no idea it was meant to be sung by a woman, and had no idea it was from Jekyll & HYDE!
I also have a wonderful image of George Hearn in full drag doing "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" for LA CAGE.
A friend of mine sang "I'm just a girl who can't say no!" and every time she came to the word NO, she tried and tried and simply couldn't say the word! I wet myself!
I used to sing a 16 bar cut from "I'm Flying" as if I was petrified of heights. I got a lot of great reactions from it.
Sutton sings Oklahoma outside auditions....

How do you guys feel about Climb Every Mountain done with innuendos?
I was at an audition for "Beauty and the Beast" and the guy who played Luimere at his audition (knowing he wanted to role) sang a love song to a feather duster.
Also...
ray,
not sure if you know this but on Faith Prince's CD she actually sings "Something Wonderful" as Adelaide.
Also, I didn't know that about Sutton and "Oklahoma". It's on her CD and I couldn't figure out why in the world it was. If she was from there I guess I could.

I've used "Alive" from Jeckyl and Hyde and changed the end from ED WARD HYYYDE to FRANK EN STEIIIIN. It worked very nicely for Young Frankenstein.
For Rocky Horror they wanted a song from the show and a pop or rock song so after I did Dammit Janet, I did Tearin Up My Heart from NSYNC as sung by Brad.
My fiance does a hysterical version of All For You from Suessical as if she's completely annoyed and fed up with doing it for Horton.

Our final in our voice class in school was to pick a 32 bar cut of a song we've worked on that year. and then go up and say "hi my name is _________ and I will be singing ____________ from __________ to audition for the role of ___________ in ___________."
So there were some really good choices and some really bad ones. But my friend Michelle by FAR had the best one. There is rumor of our schol doing Gypsy next year so she goes up and says "Hi my name is Michelle and I will be sining Hit Me With A Hot Note to audition for the role of Louise in Gypsy"
So she starts singing and is like playing with her fingernails, and mumbling the song to herself and then on "I'll come in right on the beat" she grew into the song and just started belting her face off. then proceeded to climb up the stairs onto the stage and 'makes use' of the railing. And on the button of the song she pulled her sweater down on one shoulder.
It was absolutely flawless.
