Do you think that it is better to see Avenue Q without having heard the cast recording? Typically I prefer to be familiar with the music before I see a show, but in this case I am thinking it might be funnier if I experience it without prior knowledge of the lyrics.
Does anyone have any advice on this?
Defentally experience first. I'm taking my friends without telling them anything!!! I'm going to be sitting there watching thier reactions!
The lyrics to Avenue Q are quite memorable because they're so funny. I think it's best to not know much about it before seeing it.
You could listen to a few songs before you go. "Fine, Fine Line" won't give away any jokes.
When I saw it, I was glad I had because people were laughing before I heard the ends of the jokes...
I'm glad I didnt listen to any of the music before I went. There is a shock factor to the comedy that I would have missed out on. I mean, The last line of If You Were Gay... I was screaming! Hilarious.

I think it depends on the sound in the theater. I am listening to the recording of AVE Q as the theater here in Buffalo isn't great for sound and many lyrics get lost. Some touring shows have great sound, others are poor.
With AVE Q i'm sure things will be lost because of the laughter.
Personally I think it's because I was so familiar with the recording I didn't really enjoy the show all that much. It wasn't bad, I was just bored a lot of the time because I felt like I already knew everything that was going to happen. And the puppets and actors just couldn't hold my interest. It's sad because I was really excited to win the lottery, and then I sort of felt bad that I'd taken a spot from someone who might have really loved it.

I've been listening to the album for about a year now, and I finally got to see the show yesterday. Even though I already knew all of the jokes (in the songs, at least) there was so much happening visually, and in the touring cast's interpretations of the material that I still found myself laughing just as much as the people around me who clearly had no idea what they were in for (Atlanta, GA, what do you expect?). After the show, and after listening to the album one more time, I feel that the original cast is the best cast to have on the recording, but I'm really glad that I saw the cast I did! I hope this show sticks around for at least a few more years!
I was worried that I wasn't going to enjoy the show as much because I knew the cast recording so well, but I really enjoyed it. I don't think it was an issue for me.
Thanks everyone - your advice is truly appreciated.
