Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Avenue Q
(Golden) $425,084 5,544 0 8 796 $76.67 87.1%

Is it normal for a play that won Best Musical be at 87% attendance week after week?

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Selling out is a lot less common than people think. A Tony award doesn't grant a show capacity attendance. Selling out is not the norm.

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Week after week?????

The 87.1% was for the week of the RNC which killed business on Broadway nearly across the board (the only exceptions were Wicked, and Boy From Oz's next to last week). Heck, even Lion King was at 80% for that week.

Avenue Q has otherwise been basically sold out for months:

The Week ending 8/29 -- 99.6%
The Week ending 8/22 -- 99.7%
The Week ending 8/15 -- 99.6%
The Week ending 8/8 -- 99.6%
The Week ending 8/1 -- 99.5%
The Week ending 7/25 -- 99.8%
The Week ending 7/18 -- 99.7%
The Week ending 7/11 -- 99.2%

Week after week? Check your facts before you post, please.

Week after week? Are you on glue? It's been at 99% since it won the Tony. It only dipped recently because of a certain convention held in NYC that decimated the audience for most Broadway shows. Especially those NOT on the approved list.

Margo, you beat me to it.

Margo - you are awesome... You always find a way to give an answer without making the poster feel like an idiot... THANK YOU!

Popcultureboy - that was a bit harsh - and no - Glue is not my thing... Do you need a hug?

It's not selling cause it sucks and people are realizing that WICKED did get screwed. I have not seen Ave Q though but I know it is not great like Wicked

Notice that it IS sold out week after week after week (look up the page, dear). So sorry to disappoint you. Guess those psychic powers you use to determine what shows you haven't seen "Suck" or "Don't suck" must be on the fritz......

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

87% - I think that was your blood alcohol content when you read it... re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Avenue Q is brilliant on so many levels and that is why it's selling at near 100% capacity (also, the TONY helped)

- It started off-broadway and created a good buzz.
- It discounted heavily (BECAUSE IT KNEW IT'S SHOW WAS GOOD) in the beginning. Hey, I saw it for free in Previews.
- It came into a small Broadway house.
- Kept it's overhead low.

Now, they are profiting week after week (at near 100% capacity). For a new musical to pull this off (especially one about puppets geared towards adults)... is remarkable. Then again, Lopez and Marx wrote a brilliant script.

And, I didn't even mention the talented actors.

My only problem with Q is that they aren't doing the national tour. I don't like the way that whole situation went down... there are alot of dissapointed regional theatres.

Bronx- This is just one opinion, but I think Avenue Q kicks Wicked's ass...like, a lot.

EDIT: Sorry. Bad typing skills.

I think he proved his own stupidity when he wrote:

"I have not seen Ave Q though but I know it is not great like Wicked".

How would he know anything about the quality of a show he hasn't seen? Yeesh, what a ten year-old.

(And I've seen Wicked, so I have the authority to say it's crap. re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%)

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Children,
Listen to Margo. Avenue Q had a week at less than 90%. Don't fear, one week does not a trend make. Would you kids be happy with an 87% on a test? Probably. And please do not warp every discussion into a battle between Wicked and _______(enter show name here). It is making some of us tired. We are good people generally, but do not continue to irritate us or you will see what wicked really is.

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

i think all of y'all should come down from the pedistools you have so eagerly put yourselves on and get over the fact that you might know everything about broadway...it's not impressive and quite annoying. if someone thinks Wicked is the best thing since who knows what, then let them think that. don't discourage them from the broadway community just because they're passionate about one show. Wicked is an amazing show and has brought a lot of new people to the broadway scene, so don't act or pretend like it's crap when it's not.

re: Avenue Q - why is it at 87%

Oh for the love of baby Jesus. Please read the following VERY carefully:

A lot of people on this board love Wicked. A lot of people on this board don't care for the show one way or the other. A lot of those people are sick to death of threads about the show that are worthless or have appeared hundreds of times before and can be found using the search function. That's why so many Wicked threads dissolve into bashing. This has been said time and time again so for God's sake would you all pay attention this time? THIS thread started by someone called Wickedfan2 and was a veiled (and ill informed) attack on Avenue Q. Which is why it's gone the direction it's gone in.

oh, BlueWizard, that just made my day... i'd also like to say that those who have supposedly put themselves on "pedistools" are probably some of the most respected members of this board for their knowledge...
