Ay Up Chuck! - 'Corrie' Is Set For The Stage

Classic characters from the yesteryear of 'Coronation Street' will return in the soap opera's first ever stage adaptation.
One of the ITV show's writers will condense the biggest dramas from 50 years in Weatherfield into a two hour play.
Popular residents including Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Bet Lynch and Curly Watts will all star in the production, entitled Coronation Street Abridged Live!

Classic characters: The show will feature Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) and Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander) and many of the famous names.

The production will open at the Lowry Theatre in Salford - not far from the Corrie set in Manchester - in August before touring nationwide.
Corrie scriptwriter Jonathan Harvey is comprising 2,000 storylines, including 115 deaths, 37 births and 86 marriage from the show.
None of the current or past cast will be starring the show, which will cast brand new faces to breathe new life into some of the characters long vanished from our screens.
Coronation Street's executive producer Kieran Roberts, said: 'The very heart of British television has been beating with the pulse of Coronation Street for 50 years.
'That's a lot of memories, a lot of drama, a lot of poignancy and a lot of laughter.

'I'm thrilled at the prospect of bringing to life on stage all the great stories and characters of 50 years of Coronation Street and I'm sure the play will be a real treat for Corrie fans as well as a great night out in the theatre.'
Promoter Phil McIntyre, who is co-producing the show with ITV Studios, said: 'I saw the first ever episode of Corrie when I was eight and it's been a part of my life since then, so what an honour it is to bring the whole 50 years back to life 'live' on stage in it's hometown of Salford.'

August 12th for limited season before 12 week UK tour.

The theatre venues will come with airline style seating, with a pocket in front of you that has a safety card and a all important vomit bag.

I bought this book in Canada about 3 years ago and read it a year lady while on holiday. Absolute classic, well worth getting if your any kind of Corrie fan.

I saw this at the Lowry on Saturday: a mixed bag but overall more positives than negatives.

The most effective parts of the evening were the extracts of classic scenes and dialogue from the show itself - particularly when delivered effectively by the cast of five who each took on many many characters. Josie Walker was particularly good at emulating the mannerisms and voice of Annie Walker despite looking nothing like her: then add to that she was also a superb Raquel. Another superb actress that I'd never heard of before called Katherine Dow Blyton had Deidre Hunt/Langton/Barlow/Rashid down to a T but also had to do Ena Sharples as well.

I could say much more about how good the cast were but the theatre had run out of programmes, which always makes me livid.

The weak points were the new dialogue, where characters past and present interact with each other, and the narration and other stuffing that is used to pad out the evening. The direction was inadequate, with several times when there was nothing happening on stage whilst at other times (one plotline acted out in ballet!) I wished there had been nothing happening on stage.

I'd forgotten about this.
It sounds very summer season/ end of the pier in the 80s.
