It looks like I'll be living at BAM for much of next year. I can't wait for the return of Edward Hall's Propeller troupe (their Midsummer Night's Dream a few seasons ago may be my favorite Shakespeare production I've ever seen) and Cheek By Jowl (which just did a wonderful Twelfth Night at BAM). And it'll be great to see Sir Ian again (NYC is getting a lot of Lears lately -- Andre de Shields just finished one at Classical Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Epstein just did one at La Mama and Kevin Kline is scheduled to do his at The Public in a few months):
" Sir Ian McKellen, Shakespeare productions from Cheek by Jowl and Edward Hall's Propeller troupe and the previously announced Matthew Bourne dance piece Edward Scissorhands are among the shows coming to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2007.
McKellen will appear in the U.S. premieres of the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of King Lear and The Seagull, both directed by Sir Trevor Nunn. The Shakespeare and Chekhov plays, respectively, will play in repertory at BAM's Harvey Theater from Sept. 6-30. McKellen will play the title character in Lear and will play Sorin in "selected performances" of The Seagull at BAM, according to a release. The productions will make their world premieres earlier in the year, in March 2007, in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The U.S. premieres of director Edward Hall's of The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night will be acted out by his all-male troupe Propeller in repertory at BAM's Harvey Theater from March 17-April 1.
Cheek by Jowl's Cymbeline will make its U.S. premiere at the Harvey Theater May 2-12. The company's co-artistic director Declan Donnellan will direct.
Edward Scissorhands was previously announced to arrive at BAM as part of a national tour that will play Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto, among other cities. The dance piece, based on Tim Burton's film starring Johnny Depp, will play BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House from March 14-31. Bourne (Swan Lake, the currently running Mary Poppins) devised, directs and choreographs the piece and Terry Davies provides the music and arrangements, which are based on themes from the film's score by Danny Elfman. The show had its world premiere in London in November 2005."

Oh, I really liked Edward Scissorhands. It wasn't perfect- the ending came on too quickly and peremptorily- but some of the choreographic ideas were really nice.
Also, I went on Opening Night and they gave me free stuff.

I'm wondering if McKellen will agree to go on tour in the US with these productions, or at least to LA...
As for Propeller, I am so upset that UCLA Live (our 2nd rate competitor to BAM) has not yet brought Edward Hall's Propeller troupe to LA. They did bring a Cheek by Jowl production of Otello which unfortunately had a badly mis-cast Otello.
Does anyone know if BAM has any sort of advance student ticketing program. I swear I read that they did somewhere, but their site only mentions rush. I'm probably just dreaming this up, but I could have sworn I saw something about it with Hedda Gabler last season.
