I can't tell, is it a BBC movie of the musical, or is it just one based on the real life of Sweeney Todd?
Yes, there was an actual Sweeney Todd - and here is his story!

Posted: 7/13/05 at 8:49amI couldn't either but since there are already plans for a movie musical, I'm assuming that this BBC version will be based on the original story. I also don't think that Ray Winstone is a singer after looking at his credits.

Posted: 7/13/05 at 11:27amThis is kind of unrelated, but a little while ago BBC Films made 'Tomorrow La Scala!' which was about a small amdram group putting on a production of Sweeney Todd in a prison - it was great, with plenty of musical excerpts from the show. However, rights issues means it is unlikely to be seen again.

Actually, there is not all that much evidence that Sweeney Todd, or at least a murderous barber on Fleet Street, ever existed. Wikipedia has some info on the legend, and the belief that it is a true story...
