What's the BEST and most deserving Musical to win the Tony for Best Musical.
I'd say:
Kiss Me, Kate
South Pacific
Fiddler on the Roof
Cabaret
Company
A Little Night Music
A Chorus Line
Passion
And the best, in my opinion:
Sweeney Todd

Since it was up against "Into the Woods", I personally can ...

Yes, yes I can forget about Phantom...

Posted: 11/7/05 at 2:48pmSweeney Todd all the way! I have never gotten tired of it, even as a high school student doing it in community theater for a month of performances. You discover something new every time you see it/listen to it/perform it. I can never say enough about how wonderful it is.

AMEN to forgetting about Phantom!!!! I'd rather vote for the Maury Yeston Phantom any day.
But Sweeney Todd still wins!

Posted: 11/7/05 at 2:52pmI think I have worn out my posting welcome on this thread, but if Sweeney Todd wins, Into the Woods is the runner-up.

I agree with Sweeney Todd, but I believe Little Women should still be open...it deserved at least a nomination.
Go Sweeney Todd! woo!!!

ummm...what?

Posted: 11/7/05 at 3:04pm...So, I guess I'm the only one who can't stand THE MUSIC MAN. It's, I think, the most annoying musical I've ever seen.

Posted: 11/7/05 at 3:05pmComments like that annoy me. Have you seen a REAL production of the show, or only your high school's? If you examine the source material and really think about the show - it's EXCELLENT and, in my opinion, deserved to win over WEST SIDE STORY.

Little Women closed way too soon and if it was still open it would deserve to win a Tony for Best Musical...or at least a nomination...But besides that, I'd go with Sweeney Todd.
Get it now?

LITTLE WOMEN was eligible to be nominated for best musical. And it wasn't.
I don't understand how people can despise THE MUSIC MAN. Just doesn't make sense to me.
#20re: BEST Best Musical
Posted: 11/7/05 at 3:10pmI've seen community and high school productions of it, as well as the 1962 film version. I am just not a big fan of the score.

I saw a small town "no where" community theatre production of "Music Man" years ago, and it was enough to prove to me how ROCK SOLID this show is. One of the best, strongest satire shows ever written, even if produced for ten bucks with less-than-Broadway caliber performers. Very few musicals could hold up to that test and come out successful. This one does.

I still don't get it, because it has nothing to do with the thread.

Munkustrap --I won't put down The Music Man because I do think it's a good musical - but it WAS old-fashioned even then. West Side Story was unlike anything on Broadway before that, and was, I believe, considered too much of a risky and risque show to win the best musical compared to the FAR more conservative and safe musical The Music Man. It's nearly impossible to speak objectively when comparing them, but strictly from a historical perspective WSS should have won, just as Sunday in the Park with George should have beat La Cage Aux Folles (again, two good musicals where I fell the EXACT same mindset decided the winner).
I'd be interested to hear your rationale for why Music Man deserved to win over West Side Story...
