Why Durham, NC? Because the Nederlanders just built a brand new Performing Arts Center. It's actually a strong controversy here in the Triangle, because Raleigh used to house the large national tours. Recently, THE COLOR PURPLE, THE LION KING, RENT, WICKED, SPRING AWAKENING, BEAUTY & THE BEAST and the like have all gone to Durham instead of Raleigh.
All the papers were speculating that Durham would soon be the #2 theatre destination in NC, behind Charlotte -- calling for the end of Raleigh's Broadway Series South. I think a headline read "Broadway is dead in Raleigh." (Which is NOT true because North Carolina Theatre (www.nctheatre.com) is still going strong and produces exceptional "Broadway" productions, often getting big names from New York and mixing them with local talent.)
BILLY ELLIOT will open in Durham November 2-14, 2010.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
