re: BWW TV EXCLUSIVE: One Night Only - Effie Meets Effie Preview

this would have been a helluva lot more interesting if it would have been movie effie meets original broadway cast effie.

now *that* would have gotten my attention!

Does anyone else have trouble watching the new big videos? Whenever I try, after a ten or so minutes it says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with a plug in and needs to close". Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

What makes her an expert? I would think she did her homework about the character of Effie before doing the movie - and lived in that part for a few months while shooting.

And if you want to go by your snarky logic - even if she did 800 takes - clearly that would mean she was given direction and one would think that she LEARNED MORE than someone who did it in ONE - and that, my snarky lil buddy would make her coaching just as valuable if not more so.

Personally, I don't think Ms. Hudson did anywhere close to 800 takes though. If she wasn't right for the part, she would have never made it through production. And she certainly wouldn't be getting the praise and nominations.

In case no one has noticed, soulman is a bitchy little grump who refuses to believe that Jennifer Hudson might actually make a better career for herself than Holliday. And in case you also didn't know this soulman, in addition to the research and soulsearching Hudson did for the role, she had two intense days of training with Bill Condon right before rehearsals. She no doubt used some of that training for this girl.

A series like this puts High School Musical to shame. This is about real kids who have overcome real problems and they are going to put on a much better musical then those brats in High School Musical.Oh yea, and Jennifer Hudson is fantastic!

Hudson does a nice job coaching the girl -- and you can actually hear her improving with each piece of advice. That's what good coaches can do for a performer.

As for her qualifications, yes, prior to Dreamgirls Hudson was a novice at acting, but she went through extensive one-on-one training and coaching herself from Condon and others to be able to do the role of Effie (and sometimes coaching someone else is just a matter of passing on good advice one has gotten from others). It obviously paid off since she seems to be the favorite to win the Oscar for that performance. I wouldn't ask her for advice on playing Medea or Lady Macbeth, but as far as Effie goes, she knows that role as well as just about anyone around these days (excepting, perhaps Krieger, Mme. Holliday and a few others).

There's no need to criticize her for taking time out of what must be an insanely busy schedule to fly in and help out this little high school girl playing this role for the first time (though, probably not the last if those clips are any indication of her abilities). And knowing BET's paltry pay scale, she didn't do it for the money. It was a nice gesture on her part and she should be admired for her generosity, not slammed for it.

I think that this young girl was fantastic, I wonder how many other actresses would have made a great Effie, like Jennifer Hudson did. It makes me wonder that only one actress gets recognition, but so much talent out there. So many other actresses could have been as great or who knows, even better than Hudson if they were given the opportunity.

"snarky logic."

"Bitchy little grump"

I am allowed to think whatever i want to think and caling me a Bitchy Little grump" is far from cute. i will gladly admit that i could lay off hudson. I mean, i dont think she did baaaaaaad. One comment from me on hudson however doesnt come close to comparing to the 100's of cheap shots about Ms. Holliday on this board. deal with it. i know i do.

Besides all the nastiness towards me, there were several valid points on how Hudson is qualified. I would be glad to lay off of her on this matter. As for her performance, I will continue to have my opinion

I'll give peace a chance

I wouldn't complain if you had JUST made that one comment. But you have made numerous out of line comments about Hudson and her performance and you have never made any VALID points with your opinions. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, yes, that is true. But you can't expect to lash out on a performer, one who is visibly one of the sweetest and most modest in the business, continuously (yes, you have done it CONTINUOUSLY) and not expect to get a taste of your own medicine.

I really don't care for Patti Lupone, but for reasons that I admit don't really make much sense if I tried to explain it to anyone. I don't lash out at her as a person or as a performer because that is a) not fair to her and b) wouldn't make me any more credible of a poster here.
