It looks like the show that Gower Champion never directed. It really feels like a late 50's early 60's show. but my sources also tell me the right hook you don't see coming is the clever book.
If that's the case, then the staging is a clever stylisttic choice indeed.
And I hate it when people look at a few minutes from the show and make god-like "I hate it" "It doesn't work" comments. Remember, Pippin sold because the showed THE ONLY two good minutes in the show. I think I could cut a very VERY unappealing trailer from "Wicked" and "Rent" and "Chorus Line" and "Les MIz" if I was inclined to. AND ALSO perhaps they are holding back the good stuff because they don't want to give away the plot points.....
