An Internet "shill" is someone who posts on these message boards with the sole purpose of marketing the show. For example, they'd start threads about a show to get people talking about it, or they'd post testimonials (fake or real) about how much they loved the show, etc. There's a fine, fine line between a shill and a genuine fan, but IMO the difference is that the shill is doing it for pure marketing reasons (they're either paid or get recompense in some way).

It's a dirty business, and a pretty lame way of getting people to see or stir up hype about a show. Check out the thread link below and check out lovesclassic's post on public relations; I found it very insightful.

Here is the definition I found

"One who poses as a satisfied customer or an enthusiastic gambler to dupe bystanders into participating in a swindle"

Now let me add that I am not POSING as a satisfied customer... I am posing / posting as Amneris a board member who happens to be rooting for this show.

But you still are 1) connected to the show and have an unobjective position about it and 2) have been posting for days about BKLYN and extolling it's virtues while posing as an innocent member.

Yeah Amneris - what you're doing is just wrong. Insultingly wrong.

The ONLY shilling that's appropriate, IMO, is if you're involved in a small production somewhere, and you're really excited and you want people to come; so you post a message about the show and that you're in it, and that you hope people are interested enough to buy tickets. But, in that case, you are explicitly soliciting an audience. Not hiding under a pretense of "innocent fan" helping to market a show.
