"Barbarella" Stage Musical in Development

"A musical version of the 1968 film Barbarella — which featured a scantily clad Jane Fonda — is currently in development.

Variety reports that Clear Channel Entertainment recently presented a showcase of the new musical in Manhattan. The showcase presentation featured a reworked version of the Vienna production, which was penned by Rudi Klausnitzer and Dave Stewart.

William Ivey Long designed the costumes for the production, though Clear Channel told the industry paper that Barbarella is just 'one of many' shows currently being developed. Should the company go ahead with the new musical, the production will likely bow in Las Vegas."

Very interesting. I wonder if the third part of "The Apple Tree" would really be worth expanding into its own show. It would be a great vechicle for a big name, though.

Yes - it was my understanding that it was originally going to be a Dave and Annie thing, but now only Dave seems to be associated with the project.

The Vienna run was February 2004 to 1 January 2005. The city was covered in posters for it, although they didn't seem to drum up much business. I have to confess, I thought that it looked extremely dumb from the publicity, and even after seeing it the first time I couldn't find anybody who was willing to go with me.

On a related note, I wonder if they could get Drew Sarich to come to the US and revive his roles in the Vegas production...

GREAT! The Vienna version was really really wonderful! I have seen it four times. The songs are wonderful too!

And of course Drew Sarich has such a beautiful voice.
