fflag - the duet with Josh Groban is incredible. LOVE it. And, I must say, I used to really hate the Don Johnson duet, but I got to hear it again recently and...it's not THAT bad. Honestly.
"Her marriage is the perfect excuse for not working, or not working hard, gaining weight, etc., etc." I actually agree with you there - but on the other hand, I'm just so happy that she's finally happy in her personal life..She deserves that.
I like your song selection, as well. My number one broadway song I am dying for Barbra to record though is LOSING MY MIND. The arrangement Donna Murphy used for the Sondheim Wall to Wall event would be absolutely perfect for her!
50 Percent would be a perfect song for Barbra.
Supposedly, she recorded "Losing My Mind" in the late 70s and shelved it.
I don't blame her marriage to Brolin for making her fall off the rails artistically. She was well on her way before she met him. The fire has been out of her since YENTL.
She should officially release the songs that were cut from the other Broadway albums : "Home", "A Funny Thing Happened", a stunning "Make Our Garden Grow" and an equally magnificent "How Are Things In Glocca Morra/Heather on the Hill". She als recorded "On My Own" and "Moonfall", but they don't quite work.
"The fire has been out of her since YENTL." Do you really think so?.... I don't. After all, she recorded "The Broadway Album" after that, directed "Price of Tides" - and did lots of other artisically successful things. Recording wise, I do think she has kind of taken it easy since "Higher Ground" - to me, that was her last really wonderful, to die for album (even though "Christmas Memories" had some good songs).
Oh and I've also heard all those gems you mentioned, the ones she recorded and later shelved - she should definitely release those!! I agree with your assesment of the songs though I must admit I absolutely loved her version of "Moonfall".
I've never heard of a recording of "Losing My Mind", though - that's rather exciting.
From earlier postings........
If Barbra's son is out, then, you're right.......it's no one business. Then why did you bring it up, in the first place?
As far as her husband goes and "making excuses"........Barbra has always said that she doesn't like to work. She's been doing this for 40+ years. She's enjoying her life and her priorities have changed. Her husband is her number one priority.....as it should be!
She can't have the same enthusiasm as her fans do for everything she does. That's not humanly possible!!!
Performing is her career. Just like a real estate agent, a lawyer, a teacher, etc..... The bottom line is still the same, it's a job, and like everything else in life, it can get tired or bored at certain times. Sure, it's easy for us to judge, and say that "she should do this, she should so that," but, to criticize and judge what she should or shouldn't do, isn't our place.
How would you like it if a total stranger started telling you what to do??
All it is is an opinion.
And I am sorry but making an album is not "work"; people who build bridges, build AIDS wards in hospitals, teachers who teach overcrowded classrooms for no money is WORK. BS sitting on her chubby bum in an air-conditioned studio being paid millions is not 'work'.
I am just saying that it is a shame that when all is said and done she had made some good-to-great albums and some bad-good-wonderful films. Even if she has made less than 20 films in 38 years.
There are some fans who think she sh*ts perfume and that everything she does is beyond criticism because she is "Barbra". I am not one of them. I think there is a lot of talent there but it is swathed in ego, arrogance, and stubbornness that comes with being 'yessed' for 40 years. I would love it if someone from her record label had the guts to tell her 'either you promote your work properly or we will dump you from the label.' Nothing's impossible. :)

She should include
I'd Rather Be Sailing, from A NEW BRAIN
Stars and the Moon from SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD ( I would plotz!)
The Wizard & I from WICKED
for starters!
If you think that you can make 60+ albums and make all those films and television specials and do all those concerts, and not consider it work, then go right ahead and do it.
It's funny whenever people are called ego maniacs, called stubborn, etc......it's only towards women. Men are called assertive, man of their words, etc. Double standards are all over the place.
Sure, I have my favorite Barbra films, cds, etc.......that I prefer over others, just like you do and all of us do. Just because they aren't my personal favorites, doesn't mean that it's anything less artistic or something I can't appreciate or is bad. Far from it.
What do you consider "promoting your work properly?"
Will she do any Wildhorn ?
I can not take her as a person but she has a great voice & is one of the all time best femaile vocalists so.....

She needs to do a couple of comic numbers.
In re to NealB1: Yawn. This is 2006 dude not 1976.
1. I'M ALWAYS TRUE TO YOU IN MY FASHION
2. TO KEEP MY LOVE ALIVE
3. HE HAD REFINEMENT
4. THE MONEY SONG
And hell throw in BUT THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND.
just what we all need. another Barbra broadway album. hehehe. i like her and all but yea.
I felt as though her second Bway album was too slow. While there were popular songs that she sang, it really did nothing for me.
Over the years, she has recorded many Bway songs on her albums. Some are:
1. All I Ask Of You - Phantom
2. How Does The Wine Taste ? - We Take The Town
3. Something's Coming - WSS
4. What Kind Of Fool AM I ? - Stop The World
5. Send In The Clowns - Night Music
6. Absent Minded Me - Cut From Funny Girl
7. My Pa - The Yearling
8. Why Did I Choose You - The Yearling
9. The Kind Of Man A Woman Needs - The Yearling
10.He Touched me - Drat The Cat

Whether Mr. Brolin has any awareness of her talent is a moot point, as only he would know. But she married the man to be her life partner, not her agent or business manager. And by everything I've seen - up to and most definitely including her wonderfully peaceful smile - he sure as hell seems to have an awareness of her as a woman he loves.
All in all, I'd say her priorities are in the right place.
I wish Mrs. Brolin much success, Just as long as I never have to hear her sing "Smile" again. 50% would be great for her. I would love to hear her sing "Pirate Jenny" as well as her own funny take on "Popular" and "Moonshine Lullabye", "No one is alone" - hmm... I need to make a list, I'm thinking in type.
Before the film comes out she should do something from "Dreamgirls", either "And I am telling you", "One night only" or "I am changing". Maybe "Hard to say Goodbye".
She should also include "Wicked Little Town" from Hedwig!!!
