The responses I've received indicated that people believed that I had not seen "The Scottsboro Boys." The answer was that I had seen it. I would not recommend that it return to Broadway or even appear in Chicago. It has terribly racist and insulting imagery and acts. Most black people are offended by modern day minstrelsy since it was purposedly created to make fun of black people. If you are trying to create consciousness about racism, you do not make fun of the victims of it, like the Scottsboro Boys. It is a racist assault on black people everywhere.

Nettapple, everyone who saw the show felt the same feelings at the end of the show... When those young men came out in black face we were all shocked. I think that was done on purpose to teach us about where we have come from. . . No one in the audience I was at laughed at that moment. We were in tears.

I'm sorry you think it is a "racist assault on black people everywhere." But what about characters like Wanda created by Jamie Foxx, or Shanaynay created by Martin, are those not characters created purposefully to make fun of black people, too?

I know why you're upset, but I think you need to stop acting like a victim, no one is trying to hurt you or black people.

Nettapple: Since when have people's feelings been a good enough reason for censorship? This PC crap has to end. Should La Cage be picketed because it depicts gay people as drag queens? Should every show that depicts white people as stuck up, aristocratic pricks be picketed as well?

You can't take the 'victimhood' out of the Scottsboro story no matter what you do to it -- it's kind of the point of telling the story.

It seems like your sensitivity to the subject matter has clouded your thinking.

Net: I believe they you either did not see the show or saw it with your mind made up already that is was in someway racist.

So explain yourself. Find specific moments in the show that portray the black characters in a negative light. Tell us how the lady's refusal to change seats in the final scene is racist. Tell us how when the performers refuse to respond to the interlocutor's commands it is a negative reflection on their race.

And by the way, watching a poor quality audience bootleg does not constituent experiencing this show.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
