Barrymore's Closing

At the end of this month as per the article on Playbill. It is sad to see another landmark theatre district restaurant close. First, McHale's and now Barrymore's. Whenever I was in the city this was one of the places I would always drop in to at least once. The prices were very affordable (by Times Square standards) and I always enjoyed talking with the staff.

I was there at the beginning.
A friend (the late, great, terrifically funny Thea Ramsey) was one of the first waitresses hired in what, 1974? We got our Equity cards that fall. It was our hangout.
Many was the evening and night I closed Barrymore's, sipping cocktails until 3-4. The days of wine and roses.
I haven't been there in years. See what happens when you stop drinking?

I'm paying it one last visit tonight, for a Last Supper, so to speak.
Their impending closing fills me with a great sense of loss.

Posted: 1/24/06 at 3:39pmSo many of my favorite neighborhood-type stores and restaurants are closing due to greedy landlords. In my NYC neighborhood, stores with character are closing, and banks are opening up all over. Not only is it sad, but it's boring too.

Posted: 1/24/06 at 3:40pmI will probably be in there every night until Sunday - until Craig kicks me out. I'm hoping he'll give me some beer mugs - so I can drink as if I'm at Barrymore's at home!

I made sure to stop in last Friday when I was in NY. Had the carrot cake...yum.
So sad.

Posted: 1/24/06 at 7:00pmI stopped there on a visit to NYC. They do have good carrot cake-lol. That's so sad that it is closing...especially if it is to build another Disney theatre. Why can't they use one of the other buildings already in NYC? Are they too good for them or something?

Tragic! I love Barrymore's moreso than McHales, for which I'm still in mourning.
I must hit up Barrymore's at least once more this week!

Sad, huh?
I have been there only twice ( during the run of The Boy From Oz at the nearby Imperial) but I thought the atmosphere was special.
