Baz Luhrmann's 'La boheme' - Tony eligibility...

Can anyone share how this worked in 2002/03 - it was classified as a 'musical' for the Tony categories; were some new rules introduced re the whole opera/musical genre 'clash' (for want of a better word)? Were any of the singers/performers considered for performing Tony nominations?

The production was classified as a revival being deemed a "classic" under the relatively new rules at the time. The performers received special Tony Awards for their performances.

They were given TONY HONORS awards as an ensemble. It was awarded much later than the regular TONY competitive awards given in June.

>The Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre is a non-competitive award created by the American Theatre Wing in 1990. They are presented to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible to compete in any of the established Tony Award categories.<<<

Even without the classics rule it would have been a revival as the show was performed in 1927 at the Gallo Opera House, which we now know as Studio 54. Not to mention numerous productions through the 1940s at the Center Theatre (which no longer exists) and at City Center, which while not technically a Broadway house can and has produced/presented shows that are considered Tony eligible.

What's the opera/musical "clash"? Wouldn't any opera, grand or otherwise, or operetta on Broadway be considered a musical and, depending on whether it was a new work or a revival (and or its counterpart: a classic) deemed as such?

La Boheme is certainly neither a straight play nor a new work.

Operas and ballets both get thrown into the "Musical" category. Nobody bitches about operas because they feature live singing.
