I guess you can't really compare the hype over Brooklyn with the one over Wicked. Wicked has a lot more following and crazy fans than Brooklyn will ever dream of

Well, looking at the box office receipts, the hype for Brooklyn is apparently an entirely web-based phenomenon -- few of the "fans" and "shills" are actually buying any tickets for the show itself (otherwise it would have cracked 70% attendance by now). Wicked and Rent were both nearly selling out from the first week of previews onward, weeks before any reviews had come out.
Wicked, Avenue Q, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, The Producers, The Lion King, Chicago and Rent are the only musical shows in the last decade that ever achieved the status of soldout hits.

Supposedly, people used to proudly display their ticket stubs to SOUTH PACIFIC on their mantels & coffee tables.
MY FAIR LADY was the biggest Broadway phenomenon of the 1950s, and that has not really been surpassed.

I remembered it, but, though it's still running, it's never been the sort of heavily-hyped, heavily-scalped, impossible-to-get-a-ticket, folks sleeping out on the sidewalk, sort of phenomenon like the others, even when it first opened, so I purposely omitted it from the list. A decent show for the family market -- that's about it.

Well, there hasn't been anything that crazily hyped, but I remember a lot of talk about Urban Cowboy when I first started posting on Broadway.com. And there were a lot of "Sutton is the Greatest Thing To Ever Happen" threads; a la Idina. And the Harvey vs. Antonio and Bernadette vs. MJW more recently.
