I'm wondering if the theatre reviews in the NY Times are any more truthful than a lot of their news stories
The major circulation decreases the Times is experiencing don't bode well for the continuing influence that the Times critics have had. After all, Walter Kerr was very influential but that didn't count for much when the New York Herald Tribune went down the drain

I don't think the NY Times has that much affect on the ticket sales of a show. I do think, however, that it has a subliminal affect on the Tony Folks. The Times' review creates "buzz" for a show - a buzz that falls like candy or poison into the ears of the voting body. I don't think that anyone will argue the affect that the tonys have on the ticket sales of a show - so, indirect influence is there, no doubt.
I posted this in its own thread, but it didn't catch on at all. I think it's relevant to this topic:
I've always been fascinated by the differences between the theater scene in NYC and the UK - namely the system of reviews and how they affect the performance of shows on opposite sides of the pond.
In NYC you have the heavyweights - ie: the New York Times and New York Posts of the world whose word ultimately dictates the life of a show - at least those shows that don't float on name recognition alone. As a result, smaller shows (Coram Boy, for example) come to depend on the reactions of a relative few - awaiting, with bated breath, the results of opening night's reviews.
In London you have a different system - one that relies on several papers. In that case, should one newspaper pan a production, there is still a chance that any number of other papers will keep it alive.

Because I do not like Patti Lupone I am an asshole.
Thanks Pal Joey!!
But really...if Brantley hated Gypsy or Lupone, there would be all these
hate threads to Brantley. Just pointing that out.
Now Pal Joey, back to school. Aren't you missing gym class or something?

Anyone daring to have their own opinions about things will get mercilessly attacked. Not being a fan of Patti Lupone, not thinking that the film of CHICAGO is the highest accomplishment of Western Civilization, things like that.
I wasn't planning on seeing this revival of GYPSY, and Brantley's review hasn't changed my mind. I would never ever allow a Brantley review to sway me, after his bizarre adoration of THE HISTORY BOYS and ROCK AND ROLL.

I got "Show Business" for Christmas and Brantley's portions, much like Steven Sater's twitchy acceptance speeches on the Tonys, kinda work like the strobe effects in Pokemon that were thought to give kids epileptic fits.

Ok, but since he liked it should we hate him too?
#38re: Ben Brantley
Posted: 3/28/08 at 12:57pmWe should hate him because he's so unconventionally attractive.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-
