She had damn well better not leave the show early. She can do whatever she wants after December 6th at around 5:00.

I assume you do not want her to leave as You have tickets for that day.

But I heard a rumor that on that day only Michael Crawford was going to be playing the role of Mama Rose....
or was it Pia Zadora

Yup. December 6th matinee. She damn well better be there or I'll be one disgruntled theatregoer.

Don't worry, PJ--If Michael Crawford IS in the show, I'll buy your ticket. re: re: BP leaving after December And I'll make it to that show if I have to walk the whole way!

You know one child it's okay to kill is that Rhoda from The Bad Seed. That's what I think.

How about the ending of the movie version of The Bad Seed? It's as if it was written by Dollypop!

Hey Guys--Okay, now think about it?? Why would Bernadette leave Gypsy!! In less she has been in really bad shape lately, but there have been NO reports about that!! Someone obviously just started this rumor to get people talking!! Bernadette has never backed out of a show like this and i highly doubt she will do it for Gypsy!! She takes very good care of herself, and has the best vocal trainers in the country looking after her!! As of right now this is just a RUMOR. It is nothin to stress about!!!!!:re: re: re: re: re: BP leaving after December:re: re: re: re: re: BP leaving after December

I'm in voiceanth's corner in regard to this Peters v Merman discussion.

I can't help but wonder if any of the younger members of this board have ever seen any of Ethel Merman's work. If not, I'd advise you to get a hold of the video of Call Me Madam . This at least it would give you some idea of the enormity of Ethel Merman's talent. I'm so sick of reading here the ill informed constantly writing that she screams. The woman could act .

If Peter's is having vocal difficulties (despite being miked to the hilt, a luxury Ethel was never afforded) wouldn't the sensible thing for the producers to do bring in an alternate Rose on matinee days? I don't mean her standby, maybe a lesser name but still some one who is some sort of a drawcard.

I know I get blasted for mentioning opera on this board but the whole “Peters is better than Merman” debate reminds me of the current sweetheart of Opera, Renee Fleming..

We have all these students, training to be opera singers, worshiping this woman and mocking someone like Maria Callas because Callas did not have a "beautiful voice".

Fleming has essentially the most gorgeous lyric soprano voice of the last 40 years but…she has very little sense of languages…very little sense of the interior meaning of the music she’s singing…her phrasing is loaded with weird jazzy affectations (Fleming’s first love is jazz)…her sense of drama is often misplaced..

A role model? ..I don’t think so…

But all anyone seems to hear is the gorgeous voice…the voice…the voice…

It's as if their ears have been trained only to accept something placid and lovely and when something truly disturbing comes on (Callas, Scotto) they just shut off their hearing. They can’t process it..

Peters has a naturally lilting voice of very modest size…. the timbre, while grainy at times, can be absolutely enchanting..

Merman is loud, solid, and overly resonant.. The very definition of the phrase “con brio”.. and I think people just have a hard time understanding it…

When I pay my money to go to the theatre, I am paying to see magic, characters and heightened reality. I don't want to see what real people do everyday. I don't want to see myself up on that stage wandering through life, always doing the right thing. I want to be entertained and to LEARN something. You cannot do that without creating DRAMA. I can see a good mother any day. I think audiences need mothers like Medea and Momma Rose to understand the tiny little ways they use and attack their own children everyday.
It's theatre, people. It's supposed to be larger than life: the successes as well as the tragedies. You'd think a lover of opera would understand that from the get-go.

There's only one point in her post, Voiceanth. And like Slash says, if you love opera half as much as you say you do (and God knows you shoehorn it in to enough of your responses) it's a point you really shouldn't need explaining at all, let alone over and over and OVER again.

I still don't get the point...

…..Slash say's that "I don't want to see myself up on that stage wandering through life, always doing the right thing."

No one is saying that Slash has to…..lord knows, I don't!

I'm not saying that anyone should not STAGE Medea or Mama Rose..hell, stage them every day...

I only question when one plays either character as Betty Boop..but then if you and Slash enjoy it…it won’t be a total failure…

So fine…

Should you choose to mount a play on Hitler and play him as a saint…your choice as well…

I won’t be attending it however…

and poppy I know the very mention of the word opera is threatening to Broadway lovers...and frankly, always has been…

While Bernadette’s Mama is pretty much fading into oblivion in my memory ..the sight of Aprile Millo singing Tosca in 1998 at the Met still has not......

I do so love how you constantly put down Broadway lovers and extol your own virtues of having just the most cultured knowledge of all types of theatre and music. It makes you a real pleasure to have on this board.

awww..thanks poppy....

I may have my opinions and they may never be the same as yours but that's fine...that's what this board is about...

I mean can you imagine 300 people all going with shallow breath:

"I love Ann Reinking"...I Love "Chicago!"..

Ummm...okkk..great....but where do you GO from THERE?

Get over yourself. It's bad enough you changing your pic every 5 minutes because you think you're gorgeous, but the smug and superior attitude you have just because you like music other than show tunes is just too nauseating. I have plenty of interests outside of Broadway, theatre and this message board, but I never really drag them into it because they're just not relevant.

Yep... (voiceanth checks watch) it's about time for the monthly popcultureboy hissy fit against voiceanth...

Honey, it's getting tired...I'm not alone in thinking that.....I assure you..

You don't know me nor have ever met me so please stop thinking you know anything about me…and your constant harping about my photo says more about you than it does me………

I have stated my love for many things and one of them IS Broadway..(Please note; my very recent rave of "Little Shop")...and quite frankly I don't give a rats ass what you think is relevant or not ..

Since you are a genius, you should know that all art forms INFORM each other…

Ever heard of Lenny Bernstein, ya might wanna read what he says on the subject….ok!

I will post what I want, when I want and in the manner I choose so I suggest you get over it...I ain’t going nowhere!

Gee, look, people other than the evil Namo are having issues with the person with such wide and not run-of-the-mill-AT-ALL interests as Callas, Springsteen, and "the voice of her generation," Christina "at the VMAs Couldn't Sing her Way out of a Paper" Baguilera! Surely the evil Namo must be behind this. He causes trouble!

Maybe, just maybe, it's never been about Namo at all?

Really, 'deer, cuz, seems like the lowest common denominator here is neither me nor Jerry Lewis? It's he of the demonstrated high falutin' opinion of himself. Unless I've misread. And that is all I shall say on this subject in this thread (unless provoked). Seems like VoiceAint is entirely capable of annoying vast numbers like those he invokes against people all the time without a smidge of input from little ol' me.
