Bernadette singing the alphabet is much better than half the shows that masquerade as Musical Theatre. Think Brooklyn.
STOP BEING SO FUSSY!!!

No DAME, I didn't mean that.
But considering the shows currently on Broadway, I think the fact that Gypsy was on a stage at all is a good thing, even if the production is not the best.
It's Gypsy. Even a terrible production of it is better than Brooklyn.

She was awful.
She tried so hard to make Mama Rose a bitter, angry woman that all the motherly side of her was missing, and that there was no point in which you could feel the pity for her you needed to make 'Rose's Turn' a success.

Posted: 1/3/05 at 12:30pmDear Dame, Bernadette's "mediocrity" is a matter of opinion. It is your (valid) opinion and you have every right to express it. However as you yourself have noted, many have posted a differing opinion here. Many have found Ms. Peters' performance exceptional. That is their (valid) opinion. I don't object to your stating your opinion, though I happen to disagree with it. I do find it a bit tiresome that you have continued to post it again and again with the (somewhat arrogant, in my opinion) implication that those who disagree are just plain wrong and should know better. They are not wrong. Their opinion is different, that's all. Please accept that they disagree with you. If you have something new to say, please say it, but your recent posts are not much different from your first and "we got it the first time."

Oh I totally accept that. But I was referring to the production this time and not her. And I am bored and have noting else to talk about. And sometimes I like saying things over and over. It makes me happy.. so I might just continue. DEAL WITH IT

Esig,
I don't think he was calling her mediocre. Just the production. And I agree with the fact that we are easy to accept things as wonderful that are in fact just mediocre because theres nothing else. That is very sad.. and a sad comment on the state of theater.

Meet Cathy, who's lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty's only seen the sight.
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights ...
What a crazy pair!
But they're cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.
Where Cathy adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control ...
What a wild duet!
Still, they're cousins,
Identical cousins and you'll find,
They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike ...
You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.

Now DAME, I like you a lot, but that looks to me like you were referring to Bernadette. I was referring to Bernadette, not the production, and you responded talking about mediocrity.
And if Bernadette Peters is mediocre, let me quote Salieri in AMADEUS:
"I am the Patron Saint of Mediocrity!"
I love me some Bernadette Peters!

Posted: 1/4/05 at 10:07amOk. Once and for all and at the risk of giving eslgr8 a ulcer.. I love Bernadette Peters. She is not mediocre. She was ( in my opinion) miscast in the show ( and in this case bad in it.) The production was ( in my opinion) extremely mediocre. Thats it. I am done.
