Am I reading the tony site/ ibdb wrong or was there really no award given for Best Actor in a Musical in 1985? I know it was a dry theater season but... really?

I think that that is correct. I don't think there was a Best Actress either but I'll have to check the database on both.

Yes, there were so few new musicals that they eliminated Best Actor and Actress in a Musical and put everyone in the Featured categories. I believe they also eliminated the award for best choreography.

Ben Vereen, Stubby Kaye, Patrick Cassidy, and all those guys in Big River?
If they didn't eliminate the creative awards, I can't understand why they'd eliminate performance categories?

Well, I guess it's not worth having a competition between like, two people, lol. But yes, that year they eliminated those categories.

That said, in 2001 there were only five leading ladies in musicals on Broadway, so they had to bump Randy Graff (in "A Class Act") up to leading even though she was featured so that the Best Actress in a Musical nominations for that year wouldn't be completely arbitrary. Poor Judith Ivey ("Follies")was the only one NOT to be nominated...
