Rent, The Cabaret 1998 Revival, Aida, Bat Boy: The Musical, Assassins, Into The Woods...

I couldn't live my life without those.

Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

no, only the original cast, no, definitely not, only the original off-broadway recording, only the original cast

get ragtime. and not the highlights, but the whole thing. every song is wonderful, and it is two discs, so your money will go alot further with this buy. it is definately worth multiple listens, and has many of broadway's biggest personalities right now. it was my second broadway show, and remains my favorite. a definate must have for any collection.

Okay... a little history may be in order. You should get some of the classics - if I had to pick five "classics" out of a hat I'd say Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, and Fiddler on the Roof. Others may differ - you'd probably get some votes for Show Boat, Porgy and Bess, Gypsy, West Side Story, and a bunch of others that will have hit this thread while I'm typing this.

Among the newer shows, I'm surprised that nobody's been beating the drum for William Finn. Falsettos is tremendous, and you can't knock Spelling Bee, Elegies, or A New Brain.

For my money, the four most fun cast recordings of the current millennium have been The Producers, Avenue Q, Urinetown, and Jerry Springer: The Opera.

And now I am two cents poorer.

Nobody's suggested Bare? It doesn't even cost money. You can just get if off http://www.sh-k-boom.com/bare.html.

And I'm adding Chess. I don't know if anyone's suggested it yet. But I love it!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Wow.... thanks! You've given lots to think about...

maybe I should have asked what CD's i SHOULDN'T buy! lol (sounds like you can't go wrong no matter what you buy w/Broadway music!)

Just a quick question... I am going to NY this spring (seeing 5 shows)... as of now Wicked, hopefully Piazza and probably the Lion King (the people I'm going with really want to see it even though its prob. not my first choice)... I've never heard anything from Piazza (except the Tony performace) or Lion King so do you think it would be worth buying them first, learning to love them, and THEN seeing the show? Or is the show better the first time if its all new and unpredictable?

Also, is the Lion King recording even worth buying? (I don't think anyones mentioned it yet)???

mad4music-I saw LITP before the recording came out and was swept away by the score upon first interaction. This can be the case with some people, however, some people like to know a score (especially a one like Piazza). Considering what cd's you have now I would say go out and buy the cd. And if you're reaction to it at first is negative or mixed. Listen to it a few more times. You will be able to catch certain patterns in songs and be able to appreciate some of the beauty of the score.

As for The Lion King, there's nothing major in the score that hasn't been heard in the movie. Or, at least, the ones worth while. If anything, you may need some time to grow accustomed to the African tribal songs, but that shouldn't bother you.

What NOT to buy? Um, don't buy Follies the OBC. Mainly beacuse all thoguh the orchestrations are wonderful as are most of the performances (i.e. Dorothy Collins, Yvonne de Carlo, and Ethel Shutta) the cd does not do the score justice. It butchers up at least half of the songs and as whole, the cd probably contains around 75% of the actual score (or even less). Also ,and this isn't very much a "don't buy" as it is a way to help you adjust to certain scores. If you ever come across She Loves Me and find yourself intrigued by it, by the Revival Recording first. Mainly because it plays the show at a faster tempo and most of the cast members are vocally stronger than their original counterparts. The same goes with other shows, well most of them (i.e. Chicago and Cabaret).

The Cabaret revival and the Assassins revival. I live on them.

Kiss Me Kate, Gypsy, and West Side Story are also must haves. Some of my favorites right now though are A New Brian and Merrily We Roll Along.
