Well, judging from these posts, I'd say you're absolutely right. Just buy them ALL!
If this helps you out, these are five cast recordings that got me really excited about being in theatre. They are the ones that after only one listen, I immediately started them over again from the beginning. They've stayed with me ever since:
1. Sweeney Todd (OBC) 2. Guys and Dolls (OBC) 3. A Chorus Line (OBC) 4. Brigadoon (OBC)
And recently... 5. The Light in the Piazza
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."

In terms of cds that best12bars listed (wat got u into theatre) mine would be: Kiss Me Kate (revival), Gypsy, Little Shop of Horrors, Les Miserables, and My Fair Lady. I find these pretty mandatory. But again, these were the first five that got me interested to REALLY interested in musical theatre (from ages 7-9)
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
Rent, Cabaret (the most recent revival), West Side Story, Hair, and A Chorus Line are the five OCRs that really get me all the time. I could list tons more, but if you have to go with a few, go with those.
