Why do you think the "TO BE CONTINUED!" was added to the end of Act I of Into the Woods? Because too many dumb audience members thought the show was over!

LadyG, ive had the same thing happen to me. When we saw Wicked last week, the couple next to us (they had a foreign accent, so I guess the didnt know much about Broadway) began clapping and then stood up and said "That was a great show, that witch...is she really green? Thats amazing...lets go". My mom was like "Its not over". The woman said "Oh! Is this one of those intermilton things?" I guess she was trying to say intermission but didnt know the word. It was funny.
ladyg - you're right ave q's first act ends with "fine fine line"

They said that line when we saw it, but we were all seriously in front of the standing room, and the ushers and everyone were talking during the show- I even missed out on a few songs, I never heard the line myself, but I knew the show.
So I guess the "TO BE CONTINUED!" wasn't at the end of the OBC's "Ever After?"
"The Secret Garden" when Mary finds the key and the opens the door to the garden just a bit, peeks her head in and the bright light streams in a perfect line off stage left as the orchestra swells and the curtain DROPS...damn good theater...I'm getting shivers just rememebring it and it was many years ago!

When I saw 42nd Street, I thought that was clever when Christine Embersole hurt her foot and then Julian Marsh calls out "House Lights please!" and then it was intermission. I didnt know how they were going to play that out.
Looking back on Millie, *Spoiler even though its off Broadway now* hehe.
They cover it up at the end of the show with the two of them being brother and sister and what Millie saw was just them saying good night. Well, the last time I checked, brothers and sisters dont french kiss each other. :0)
Well, the last time *I* checked, there was no French kissing at the end of act one of Millie. It's far more chaste than that.

Well I did see the show awhile ago but it wasnt just a peck on the cheek. Please correct me if I am wrong, I could be because I was sitting in the mez.
But I dont think Millie would have been upset if it just was a peck on the cheek, and I dont think it would be a cliff hanger if it was just that.
Millie saw Dorothy leaving Jimmy's room - I don't remember them even kissing at all.
Fiddler, Cabaret, Parade (the Verdict Cakewalk scares the poop outta me), Into the Woods' little "to be contiunued..." really pulls me in to
anothe non-cliffhanger, but I love what "...Forum" does. "DO you have any last words?" "Yes...INTERMISSION!"
now i've got something to say about into the woods. i 1st heard of the show back in 6th grade (college senior now). we saw a local production on a field trip... but only act 1. they never told us there was an act 2. i didn't find out until my sophomore year of hs that there was a whole 2nd act to it. that blew my mind. but then when i found out what happened in act 2... that screwed me up soooooo bad!! and i found out all of this within 5 min of discussing the show with a friend, so it all came to me fast. i wasn't happy.
still havent seen the rest of it though...
I was totally going to say Millie or Ragtime.
I read Proof last year- and WOW- that last line in Act one...that was a great great play...actually- I think I might read it again now...
Also- a good cliffhanger (not intermission) is the end of Caroline or Change.
